Why you should trust this review

I purchased 12 bags of Quikrete Fast-Setting Concrete Mix at retail in early February 2026 for a fence rebuild project. Quikrete did not provide samples. The bags were used to set 12 4x4 wood fence posts on a single Saturday afternoon.

This review reflects Quikreteโ€™s published specifications, Amazonโ€™s aggregate of 4,820 owner reviews (averaging 4.7 of 5), and direct use on the project.

How we tested Quikrete Fast-Setting Concrete

See /methodology for the standardized concrete mix evaluation protocol.

  • Set-time test: Tracked initial set across 12 post installations.
  • Working time: Measured time from water application to firm set.
  • Cure observation: Tracked post stability at 4 hours, 24 hours, and 1 week.

Who should buy Quikrete Fast-Setting Concrete?

Buy this if:

  • You are setting fence, mailbox, or deck posts.
  • You want to complete a multi-post project in one day.
  • You appreciate the eliminated mixing time and equipment.
  • You can budget the modest per-bag premium over standard mix.

Skip this if:

  • You are pouring large slabs or footings. Standard mix is more economical.
  • You need longer working time. Standard mix gives you 30+ minutes of repositioning time.
  • You are doing fine finish work. Standard mix has more workable surface for trowel finishing.

Set time and working time

The 30-minute initial set is real. After pouring water on top of the dry mix in a fence-post hole, the concrete reaches a stiff workable state within 15 minutes and a firm set within 30. Post position must be finalized within the first 5-10 minutes of water contact.

For 12 posts on one Saturday, this set time meant I could move from post-to-post without waiting between installations. By the time I finished the 12th post, the first was already firm.

Cured strength

After 28 days the cured strength reaches 4000 PSI, equal to standard Quikrete concrete mix. For fence post and mailbox post applications this is more than adequate. Lateral fence-panel weight after 24 hours has shown zero post movement.

Value

At $6.50 per 50 lb bag the Quikrete Fast-Setting is the right concrete for fence-post and small-job applications in 2026. Sakrete Fast-Set is the runner-up at the same price. Standard Quikrete is more economical for large pours. For posts, this is the answer.

Frequently asked questions

Is Quikrete Fast-Setting Concrete worth $6.50 per bag in 2026?+

Yes for fence posts and similar small-job applications. The eliminated mixing time and 30-minute set let you complete a multi-post project in a single day instead of three. For larger pours like sidewalks or footings, standard mixed concrete is more economical.

Quikrete Fast-Setting vs standard Quikrete: when do I use each?+

Fast-Setting for posts, small repairs, and time-pressured installations. Standard for larger pours where mixing in a wheelbarrow makes sense and you want longer working time. Both reach 4000 PSI cured strength.

How much do I need per fence post?+

One 50 lb bag per 4x4 wood post in a 10-12 inch diameter hole, 24 inches deep. For 6x6 posts in larger holes, plan two bags. For very rocky soil where the hole is wider, plan extra material.

Can I work the concrete after pouring water?+

Briefly. You have roughly 5-10 minutes to position the post and add a small amount of water if needed. After 15 minutes the mix begins to set firm and post adjustment becomes impossible.

How long until I can attach to the post?+

Wait at least 4 hours before applying significant lateral force, 24 hours before installing fence panels with weight. Full cure to 4000 PSI takes 28 days. For initial set and post stability, 4 hours is enough.
