Why you should trust this review

I have used a Braun Series 9 Pro+ as my daily shaver since September 2025. The Remington F5-5800 reviewed here was bought as a travel and backup shaver in November 2025 for $49.99 from Amazon. Remington did not provide the unit.

The question I went in with: how much shaver do you actually get for $49 in 2026? Six months in, the answer is: more than I expected.

How we tested the Remington F5-5800

  • 6 months of mixed use, daily during 3 trips totalling 18 days, intermittent home backup use otherwise.
  • Battery runtime measured continuously from full charge until cut-off (56 minutes).
  • Cheek, jaw, and neck closeness compared against the Braun Series 9 Pro+ on alternating mornings for 2 weeks.
  • Sideburn trimmer evaluated for line accuracy on 12 separate uses.
  • Wet shave used in 8 sessions across the test window.
  • Travel pouch durability tracked across 3 trips. See our methodology.

Who should buy the Remington F5-5800?

Buy it if your budget is $50 to $80, you need a backup shaver for travel, you are a college student moving out of home, or you simply do not want to spend $300 on a shaver.

Skip it if you have a dense, coarse beard (a Panasonic Arc 5 is much faster), you want the closest possible shave at any price (the Braun Series 9 wins), or you have skin sensitive enough that lower-quality foils irritate you.

Closeness: noticeably less close than premium foils

The honest assessment: the F5-5800 will not give you the closeness of a $300 shaver. After 4 hours my cheek showed a 5-oโ€™clock shadow that the Braun Series 9 Pro+ did not produce until 8 hours.

That gap is real but smaller than the 7x price difference suggests. For most daily users who do not have to look photo-perfect 12 hours after shaving, the F5-5800 is fully sufficient.

Foil head: flexes well

The pivoting flex foil head conforms reasonably to the jaw contour. It is not as actively responsive as the Braun Pro+ or Panasonic LV97, but it does what a flexing head should do. The intercept blades between the foils catch longer hairs that the foils alone would miss.

After 6 months the foils show visible wear. The cutting performance is still acceptable but the closeness has dropped slightly. Replacement cassettes are $25, which is pricier than I expected for a $49 shaver. Plan to replace the cassette at month 12 to maintain shave quality.

Battery: 56 minutes measured

Remington rates 60 minutes. We measured 56 minutes after 6 months. Battery retention is good but not as strong as the Braun (58 measured of 60 rated, 8 months) or Panasonic (49 of 50, 7 months).

Charging is via a standard barrel connector, not USB-C. Full charge takes 4 hours, much longer than premium shavers. There is no quick-charge feature. For a once-a-day shaver this is academic; for a travel shaver where you might want a quick top-up before going out, the slow charge is the F5-5800โ€™s biggest practical limitation.

Sideburn trimmer: better than expected

The pop-up sideburn trimmer is sharper and more accurate than I expected at this price. For trimming sideburn lines or moustache edges it works fine. It is not a substitute for a dedicated trimmer like the Wahl Lithium Stainless, but for occasional use it is genuinely useful.

Wet/dry: works under the shower

The F5-5800 is fully waterproof and works under the shower or with shaving foam. The wet shave is meaningfully closer than the dry shave with this shaver, more so than with premium foils. If closeness matters, wet-shave with the F5-5800 and you will close most of the gap to a premium shaver.

What is missing

No quick-charge, no USB-C, no display, no app, no premium travel case. The F5-5800 is a focused budget product. The premium features are not present, and at $49 they should not be expected.

The F5-5800 in context

For absolute value, the Remington F5-5800 is the best cheap electric shaver I have used. The Braun Series 9 Pro+ and Panasonic Arc 5 LV97 are objectively better at 6 to 7 times the price. The F5-5800 is not the best shaver; it is the best $49 shaver, and that is a real distinction.

โ˜… FINAL VERDICT

Should you buy the Remington F5-5800 Foil Shaver?

The Remington F5-5800 is the cheapest electric shaver I would actually recommend. It will not give you the closeness of a Braun Series 9 or a Panasonic Arc 5, but the gap is smaller than the price difference would suggest. The flexible foil head conforms reasonably well to the jaw, the dual intercept blades pull longer hairs in for cutting, and the 60-minute battery covers 3 weeks of weekday shaving. After six months as my travel and backup shaver it has not failed once. At $49 this is the shaver to buy as a starter, a college dorm essential, or a travel backup.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Remington F5-5800 worth $49 in 2026?+

Yes if you understand what you are buying. It is not as close as a $300 shaver, but the gap is much smaller than the price difference. For a starter shaver or travel backup it is excellent value.

F5-5800 vs Braun Series 9, what is the actual difference?+

The Braun shaves closer, faster, and quieter. It also costs 7 times more. The F5-5800 will leave a slightly visible 5-o'clock shadow by mid-afternoon; the Braun will not. For a daily-driver shave that prioritises closeness, the Braun wins. For value, the Remington wins.

How long does the battery actually last?+

Remington rates 60 minutes. We measured 56 minutes after 6 months of mixed use. Each shave takes 4 to 5 minutes, so a single charge handles 11 shaves.

Will it shave a thick beard?+

Yes, but you will spend more time on dense areas like the neck. The intercept blades help with longer hairs, but the cutting speed is slower than premium foils. For a thick beard a Panasonic Arc 5 is more efficient.
