Why you should trust this review
I have been reviewing smart home and security gear for 8 years with prior bylines at CNET and a long stint covering connected home for a national consumer publication. For this review I purchased 1 Ring Battery Doorbell Plus at retail in August 2025. Ring did not provide a sample. Across 9 months I logged roughly 6,480 hours of doorbell runtime at the front entry of a single family home in a Northeast climate that saw 2 winters.
I tested the Battery Doorbell Plus against the Google Nest Doorbell (Battery), the Eufy Video Doorbell Dual, and a Wyze Video Doorbell Pro using identical mounting positions on test fixtures.
How we tested the Ring Battery Doorbell Plus
Our doorbell protocol runs a minimum of 90 days. For the Battery Doorbell Plus we extended testing to 273 days. The specific tests:
- Day video quality, frame analysis at 1536p HDR in mixed light.
- Night color quality, 0.5 lux ambient and full dark.
- Head to toe view, package drop zone visibility while person at door.
- Battery life, full charge to low battery alert at 8 events per day.
- App live view wake, app open to first frame, 50 trials.
- Weatherproofing, 14 days below freezing and 12 days above 95 F.
- Subscription value, feature parity with and without Ring Protect.
Full protocol on our methodology page.
Who should buy the Ring Battery Doorbell Plus?
Buy it if you:
- Already use Ring devices or Echo Show units.
- Want a doorbell that shows packages on the porch and a person at the door in the same frame.
- Need a swappable battery design that keeps coverage continuous.
- Will pay for Ring Protect Plus for the full feature set.
Skip it if you:
- Live in Google Home. The Nest Doorbell is the natural fit.
- Want zero subscription. The Eufy Video Doorbell Dual is better.
- Live in HomeKit. Ring still does not support HomeKit natively.
- Need 1080p continuous recording. The Battery Plus is event triggered.
Head to toe view: the practical advantage
Ringโs 1:1 aspect ratio (1536 by 1536 pixels) is the practical headline. In our test the porch package drop zone (immediately below the doorbell) and a person standing at the door appeared in the same frame. With a 16:9 doorbell like the original Ring Pro you cannot see both at once.
For homes that take frequent deliveries, this matters. Notifications include the full porch and door area in one image. We caught 14 package events across 9 months where the package and the courier were both clearly visible in the same frame.
Day and night video: 1536p is enough
Daylight 1536p HDR is sharp enough for face recognition at 3 to 4 meters and license plate readability at 2 to 3 meters. Compared to higher resolution doorbells like the Eufy Dual at 2K, the Ring shows slightly softer detail at long range. Color rendering is accurate.
Night color performance is competent. With a small porch light at 0.5 lux, faces at 2 to 3 meters were identifiable in color. In full dark with IR fallback, the doorbell produces a usable monochrome image to about 6 meters. The Eufy at the same conditions is one step better in both color and IR range.
Battery life and charging
Ring claims 6 months at 5 events per day. We measured 4.2 months at 8 events per day. Adjusted for activity, the claim is around 25 percent optimistic, similar to most wireless doorbells. The swappable battery design (Quick Release Battery) means you keep a spare charged and swap in 30 seconds without taking the doorbell off the mount.
We hardwired ours at month 3 to existing 16 VAC doorbell wiring. Battery has stayed at 100 percent since and seasonal charging is no longer a chore.
App and ecosystem: best in class
The Ring app is the most polished in our doorbell tests. Live view, event history, snapshot capture (with Ring Protect), and rich notifications all work reliably. Echo Show integration is the strongest selling point. Saying โAlexa, show me the front doorโ pulls up live view in 1.8 seconds across our 50 trial tests.
Pre-Roll captures 4 seconds before the motion event. This is genuinely useful, you see the courier walking up the path before they ring. Pre-Roll requires Ring Protect.
Subscription cost: the line item
Ring Protect Basic ($4.99 per camera) gets you cloud storage and snapshot capture. Ring Protect Plus ($10 per month) is the most useful tier for households with multiple Ring cameras, it covers all cameras and adds Pre-Roll across all devices.
Without a subscription the Battery Doorbell Plus is live view and motion alerts only. No event history. No snapshots. Plan on $60 to $120 per year on top of the doorbell hardware.
Weatherproofing: solid through 2 winters
Through 14 days of subfreezing weather, 12 days above 95 F, and 6 heavy rain events, the Battery Doorbell Plus had zero water ingress and zero lens fogging. Cold weather did reduce battery life by roughly 20 percent at sustained temperatures below 20 F which is normal lithium ion behavior.
The mounting plate, button surface, and lens cover all show normal wear after 9 months and 2 winters. Build quality is solid.

Should you buy the Ring Battery Doorbell Plus?
The Ring Battery Doorbell Plus is the wireless video doorbell to buy in 2026 if you want a 1:1 head to toe aspect ratio that shows packages on the porch and a person at the door in the same frame. We measured 4.2 months of battery between charges, the 1536p HDR feed is sharp in daylight and competent at night, and the swappable battery design means coverage stays continuous. It still requires Ring Protect for the most useful features and lacks the on device AI of the Eufy class.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Ring Battery Doorbell Plus worth $179 in 2026?+
Yes if you live in the Ring or Echo ecosystem. The 1:1 head to toe view is the practical advantage. If you want zero subscription, the Eufy Video Doorbell Dual is a better value. If you live in Google Home, the Nest Doorbell is the natural pick.
Ring Battery Doorbell Plus vs Google Nest Doorbell: which?+
Pick Ring for the 1:1 aspect that shows packages on the porch with a person at the door, the swappable battery design, and Echo Show integration. Pick Nest for on device AI without a subscription, native Google Home fit, and slightly better person identification.
How long does the battery actually last?+
Ring claims up to 6 months at 5 events per day. We measured 4.2 months at 8 events per day. Adjusted for our higher activity rate the claim is around 25 percent optimistic. Hardwiring eliminates the issue entirely.
Do I really need Ring Protect?+
For cloud storage, Pre-Roll, and snapshot capture, yes. Without Ring Protect ($4.99 per camera or $10 for Plus), the doorbell does live view and motion alerts only. We pay for Plus across multiple cameras and find it worth $10 per month.
Can I hardwire it to existing doorbell wiring?+
Yes. The Battery Doorbell Plus accepts 8 to 24 VAC. Hardwiring keeps the battery topped up continuously and eliminates the seasonal charging chore. We hardwired ours after month 3 and battery has stayed at 100 percent since.
