Why you should trust this review

I have run cordless string trimmers across the past four seasons on suburban lots in zone 5 and zone 6, including the Greenworks 40V, the DeWalt 20V, and gas trimmers including the Husqvarna 128LD. The Ryobi 40V Carbon Fiber arrived as Ryobiโ€™s flagship trimmer in the brushless line. We purchased the unit at retail.

This review covers six months of weekly use including a full spring of heavy weed pressure. See our methodology page for the standardized protocol.

How we tested the Ryobi 40V Carbon Fiber trimmer

  • Eighteen full perimeter trim sessions on a third acre lot.
  • Heavy weed clearing runs at back fence line with stalks up to half inch diameter.
  • Battery runtime per 4 Ah pack across multiple sessions on actual trigger time.
  • Carbon fiber shaft flex tested by lateral load on a level concrete pad.
  • Operator ear noise reading at 3 ft using a calibrated meter.
  • Reload time on the bump head measured with a stopwatch.

Who should buy the Ryobi 40V Carbon Fiber trimmer?

Buy the Ryobi if:

  • You have a quarter acre or smaller lot.
  • You already own Ryobi 40V tools.
  • You want the lightest serious cordless trimmer at the lowest price.

Skip the Ryobi if:

  • You have heavy weed pressure at fence lines that demands more torque.
  • You want the fastest line reload. The EGO ST1623T Powerload head is meaningfully faster.
  • You want the deepest 60V tool family. Greenworks 60V or DeWalt 60V are larger ecosystems.

Cut power: light weight, real performance

On grass edge work the 40V brushless motor cuts cleanly at variable trigger speeds well below full throttle. The 15 inch cut path covers normal home edges in a single pass. On light woody weeds at the fence line, full throttle pulled through without bogging.

On dense half inch diameter weed stalks, the motor bogged briefly twice during a 20 minute clearing run and recovered within about a second each time. That is acceptable but slower recovery than the EGO 56V which does not bog in the same conditions.

Carbon fiber shaft: the right choice

The carbon fiber straight shaft does not flex on long reaches or angled work which is the difference between trimming under a deck and missing the back six inches. Aluminum shafts on cheaper trimmers flex enough that the head wanders during overhead reaches.

After six months of weekly use the shaft shows no scratches or stress markings. The cut head guard scratched on edge work which is normal.

Bump head: works, not premium

The reel-easy bump head requires a firm tap to advance line. Once you learn the rhythm it works reliably. Compared to the EGO Powerload reload system, the Ryobi reload time is meaningfully longer because you still take the head apart and hand wind line. Across a season that is roughly 25 to 50 extra minutes spent reloading line. Most owners will accept that for the $70 price savings.

Battery and runtime

The 4 Ah included pack delivered 34 minutes typical use across multiple sessions. Full throttle continuous weed clearing dropped runtime to about 22 minutes. The standard charger takes about 90 minutes from empty which is slow for the class. If you mow back to back lots, buy a second battery or upgrade to the rapid charger sold separately.

Build, weight, value

At 7.4 lb with battery the Ryobi is the lightest serious cordless trimmer in the half acre class. The strap is comfortable for long sessions. The trigger housing rubberizing is good and the HI/LO switch saves battery on light edge work.

At $179 the Ryobi sits below both the EGO ST1623T at $249 and the Greenworks 60V Brushless at $199. For suburban yards the value math is clear. For larger lots or heavier weed work, step up to the 56V or 60V class.

โ˜… FINAL VERDICT

Should you buy the Ryobi 40V Carbon Fiber Shaft Brushless String Trimmer?

The Ryobi 40V Carbon Fiber String Trimmer is the suburban yard sweet spot. It weighs 7.4 lb with battery, the 15 inch cut path covers normal edge work in a single pass, and the carbon fiber shaft does not flex on long reaches. Runtime on the 4 Ah included battery hits about 35 minutes typical use. It does not match the EGO 56V on heavy weed clearing and the bump head wants a firmer tap than the EGO Powerload.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Ryobi 40V Carbon Fiber trimmer worth $179?+

Yes for suburban yards under a half acre. It outperforms its weight class on light weed work and beats the [EGO ST1623T](/reviews/ego-power-plus-st1623t-trimmer) on ergonomics. For heavier lot work, step up to the EGO.

How does it compare to the older Ryobi 40V trimmer?+

The carbon fiber shaft is meaningfully stiffer than the older aluminum shaft, and the brushless motor runs longer per Ah. If you already own the older [Ryobi 40V battery system](/reviews/ryobi-40v-mower), this trimmer is the upgrade pick.

Will it handle weed clearing at fence lines?+

Yes for grass and light woody weeds. For dense half inch diameter stalks, the 40V motor will bog where the 56V EGO does not. Slow the trigger and walk through patches a second time.

How long does the 4 Ah battery last in real use?+

We measured 34 minutes of typical edge and trim work across multiple sessions. Full throttle continuous weed clearing dropped runtime to about 22 minutes. Standard charger takes 90 minutes which is slower than the EGO 56V rapid charger.
