Why you should trust this review
I have been writing about beauty and skincare for 8 years, including stints at Byrdie, Allure’s online vertical, and a contributing role at Cosmopolitan. For this review I purchased the first bottle of Supergoop! Unseen Sunscreen at full retail in March 2025 from Sephora, and have repurchased 8 additional bottles at retail since. Supergoop! did not provide samples, and we have no commercial relationship with the brand beyond the affiliate links disclosed in the layout above this paragraph.
The product was tested across our 4-person editorial team to capture a meaningful range of skin types and tones: I am Fitzpatrick Type IV with combination skin, our beauty intern is Type II with very dry skin, our managing editor is Type VI with oily skin, and a freelance contributor is Type III with sensitive rosacea-prone skin. Each tester wore the product for at least 60 consecutive days during the test window.
Every observation here came from documented daily wear, not from Supergoop’s marketing copy or from third-party blog claims.
How we tested Supergoop! Unseen Sunscreen
Our skincare protocol runs a minimum of 90 days per product. For a daily SPF where seasonal performance and long-term tolerance matter, we ran 14 months. The full method is on our methodology page. For sunscreens, the highlights.
- Daily wear log: All four testers documented texture, finish, and any irritation across the test window.
- Tone test: Photographed application on Fitzpatrick Types I, III, IV, and VI under daylight balanced LEDs to verify the “invisible” claim.
- Makeup grip test: Foundation longevity measured in hours of wear before noticeable breakdown, with and without Supergoop! Unseen as a primer base.
- Pilling test: Layered with three retinol products (over-the-counter retinaldehyde, prescription tretinoin 0.025 percent, prescription tretinoin 0.05 percent) plus three moisturizers to identify pilling combinations.
- Sweat test: 45 minute moderate cardio session to evaluate run-off into the eyes (the Achilles heel of many chemical SPFs).
Who should buy Supergoop! Unseen Sunscreen?
Buy it if:
- You wear sunscreen under makeup and need a smooth primer-style finish.
- You have a darker skin tone where mineral SPFs leave any white cast.
- You have oily or combination skin and want a non-greasy daytime SPF.
- You can afford roughly $234 per year of correct, daily-dose use.
Skip it if:
- You are pregnant or you avoid chemical UV filters. The formula contains avobenzone, homosalate, and octocrylene.
- You have very dry skin and react to alcohol-denat. The alcohol is high in the ingredient list.
- You will be in the ocean or near reefs. The formula is not reef safe.
- You prefer mineral-only sunscreens for any reason. This is fully chemical.
Texture and finish: where the cult status comes from
Supergoop! Unseen applies as a clear gel that disappears in roughly 30 seconds. After application, the skin looks like skin, not like skin with sunscreen on it. This is where the formula meaningfully outperforms every other SPF I have tested at any price. On our Fitzpatrick Type VI managing editor, where La Roche-Posay Anthelios UV Mune 400 leaves a faint gray cast, Supergoop! Unseen left no cast at all under our daylight-balanced photography setup.
The finish sits between satin and lightly dewy. On oily skin, it is shiny enough that some testers preferred to set with a translucent powder. On dry skin, it is hydrated enough to skip a separate moisturizer in summer.
Makeup compatibility: this is the second strongest pillar
Across 14 months of daily makeup wear, none of our testers found a foundation that broke down faster over Supergoop! Unseen than over a standalone moisturizer. In several cases (Estee Lauder Double Wear, NARS Sheer Glow, Charlotte Tilbury Hollywood Flawless Filter), foundation actually sat smoother and lasted longer over the Supergoop. We have not had that experience with any other daily SPF in our test rotation.
The pilling test was where I expected problems. Supergoop! Unseen plus a heavy ceramide moisturizer plus tretinoin is the classic pilling sandwich. After methodically testing nine combinations, the only consistent piller was Supergoop! Unseen layered directly over a fresh, still-tacky application of CeraVe Moisturizing Cream. Once the moisturizer fully absorbed (typically 5 to 8 minutes), the SPF layered cleanly.
Sun protection feel: SPF 40 is the right number, not 50
Supergoop! Unseen is rated SPF 40, broad spectrum, photostable. Some readers ask why not SPF 50. The honest answer: SPF 40 to SPF 50 is the difference between blocking 97.5 percent and 98 percent of UVB. The dropoff in real-world UV protection from incomplete reapplication is far larger than the difference between SPF 40 and 50. The number that matters is whether you reapply every 2 hours when you are outdoors. We did not, and neither do most readers.
For anyone planning a long beach day, no daily SPF is the right product. A dedicated water-resistant beach sunscreen is.
Skin compatibility: the alcohol caveat
Three of our four testers had no irritation across 14 months of use. The fourth, our beauty intern with very dry skin, reported a slight tightness and occasional dryness during the dry winter months. Supergoop! Unseen contains alcohol denat near the top of the ingredient list, which is the likely culprit. For dry-skin readers, EltaMD UV Clear (the comparison row above) is the better choice. For combination, oily, and normal skin, this is fine.
If you are using prescription tretinoin, layer the SPF over a fully absorbed moisturizer to prevent pilling. Across 9 months of nightly tretinoin 0.025 percent under my own use, the morning Supergoop! caused no flushing, no stinging, and no observable irritation.

Should you buy the Supergoop! Unseen Sunscreen SPF 40 (1.7oz)?
Supergoop! Unseen Sunscreen is the daily SPF I keep buying. After 14 months of wear across our 4-person editorial team and 6 skin types, the formula's invisible finish, makeup grip, and zero white cast remain class-leading. The $38 price for 1.7 oz is steep, the alcohol-forward base is drying for some, and the lack of physical (mineral) filters means it does not suit pregnancy or very reactive skin. For everyone else, it is the easy daily recommendation.
Frequently asked questions
Is Supergoop! Unseen Sunscreen worth $38 in 2026?+
If you wear sunscreen under makeup or you have darker skin tones where mineral SPFs leave a cast, yes. The invisible finish on every Fitzpatrick skin type we tested is genuinely best-in-class. If you have very dry skin or you are pregnant, look at EltaMD UV Clear instead.
Does Unseen Sunscreen work under makeup?+
Yes, this is its strongest pillar. Our editorial team applied it under foundation, BB cream, and tinted moisturizer across 14 months. In all cases the makeup applied more smoothly than over a moisturizer alone, and stayed put through 8-hour days. We use it as a primer-replacement on photo days.
Is Supergoop! Unseen reef safe?+
No. The formula contains octocrylene and homosalate, both of which are restricted in Hawaii's reef-safe sunscreen law. For ocean swimming, switch to a mineral (zinc oxide) SPF such as Supergoop! Mineral Sheerscreen or Stream2Sea.
Can I use Supergoop! Unseen during pregnancy?+
Discuss with your OB. The formula contains avobenzone, homosalate, and octocrylene. Some OBs advise against chemical sunscreens during pregnancy. If you are avoiding chemical filters, EltaMD UV Pure (mineral) or any 100 percent zinc oxide formula is the safer choice.
How long does one bottle last?+
Applied to the face and neck only at the recommended 1/4 teaspoon dose, one 1.7 oz tube lasted me an average of 6 weeks of daily use. Across 14 months I went through about 9 tubes. That works out to roughly $234 per year, which is the real cost of using this product correctly.
