Why this product

The Zilla Heat Mat Mini 4W is the under tank heater we point first time leopard gecko, juvenile ball python, and corn snake keepers toward when the enclosure is 10 to 20 gallons. The 4 watt output is the right wattage for a small enclosure on a thermostat, the adhesive backing sticks to the underside of the tank without aluminum tape, and the price is low enough that most keepers buy this and an Inkbird thermostat together for a complete heat setup under $60.

For this review, we built our analysis from Zillaโ€™s published spec sheet, recent Amazon owner photos, and direct comparison with three other heat mats. Zilla did not provide a sample. Where we cite a measurement, the source is the manufacturer spec sheet or aggregate owner reports.

The defining trade with this mat is that it requires a thermostat for safe use and the thermostat is a separate purchase. A heat mat without a thermostat runs at full power continuously and can exceed safe surface temperatures, particularly in a room that runs warm. Plan to buy the heat mat and the thermostat together as a single purchase decision.

What Zilla claims (specs)

Zilla lists the Heat Mat Mini at 4 watts with an approximately 4 by 5 inch surface area, a 6 foot cord, and an adhesive backing that sticks to the underside of the tank glass. The manufacturer states the surface temperature reaches 90 to 95 degrees Fahrenheit at the glass surface above the mat in standard ambient conditions. The mat positions for 10 to 20 gallon reptile enclosures.

Setup time per the manufacturer is 5 minutes for unboxing and installation. The mat sticks to clean glass without separate aluminum tape and the cord exits one corner. Plan the orientation of the cord exit before sticking the mat because the adhesive bonds permanently.

Who should buy

This heat mat is the right call for any keeper with a leopard gecko, juvenile ball python, juvenile corn snake, or hognose snake in a 10 to 20 gallon enclosure. The 4 watt output is the right size for that footprint, and the adhesive installation is simple enough that most keepers do not need to watch a video to install it correctly.

Buy this mat and an Inkbird ITC-308 thermostat together for a complete belly heat setup. Skip this mat if your enclosure is 36 by 18 or larger, where the medium 8 watt or large 16 watt versions are the right size, or if your species (bearded dragon, chameleon) needs an overhead basking lamp instead of belly heat.

Belly heat and why leopard geckos prefer it

Leopard geckos are belly heat species in nature. They sit on warm rocks and substrate that has been heated by the sun, and the warmth conducts up into their belly. An overhead basking lamp does heat the air and warm the surface from above, but leopard geckos do not bask under the lamp the way bearded dragons do. They retreat to a hide and warm their belly on the substrate above the heat mat.

This is why an under tank heat mat is the standard primary heat source for leopard geckos rather than an overhead basking lamp. The mat heats the substrate from below, the gecko sits on the warm side substrate or in a warm side hide, and the body warms from the belly up the way the species evolved to do.

Installation and the thermostat requirement

The mat sticks to the underside of the tank glass on the warm side, covering about one third of the floor area. The tank sits on its plastic frame edges (most glass aquariums have a raised plastic rim that lifts the glass off the shelf surface) so the mat is not crushed against the shelf, which can cause overheating. If your tank does not have a raised rim, prop the tank on small wooden blocks or rubber feet to leave space for the mat to dissipate heat.

The Inkbird ITC-308 (or any reptile thermostat) plugs the heat mat into the wall through the thermostat, and the thermostat probe sits inside the enclosure on the warm side substrate. Set the thermostat to 90 to 92 degrees Fahrenheit for a leopard gecko or 88 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit for a ball python, and the thermostat cycles the mat on and off to hold the target temperature.

Long term plan

For most leopard gecko keepers, this mat is a permanent fixture. The 4 watt mini lasts indefinitely on a thermostat that protects it from continuous full power operation, and the mat does not degrade in performance over years. The only reason to upsize is if you upgrade the enclosure to 36 by 18 or larger, where the medium or large mat is the right size.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a thermostat with this heat mat?+

Yes. Heat mats run hotter than safe surface temperatures without a thermostat. The Zilla mat is rated at 90 to 95 degrees Fahrenheit at the glass surface above the mat, but ambient temperature, room temperature, and substrate thickness all affect the actual delivered temperature. An Inkbird ITC-308 or Hydrofarm Jump Start thermostat (about $30 to $40) plugs the heat mat into the wall through the thermostat, and the thermostat probe sits inside the enclosure on the warm side substrate. The thermostat cycles the mat on and off to hold the target temperature.

How big a heat mat do I need for a 20 long?+

The mini 4 watt mat is sufficient for a 10 gallon. For a 20 long (30 by 12 by 12 inches), most keepers prefer the medium 8 watt mat which covers about one third of the floor on the warm side. The 4 watt mini still works for a 20 long if room temperature stays above 70 degrees Fahrenheit, but the medium gives more headroom for cooler rooms. For a 40 breeder or larger, plan for the large 16 watt mat or two medium mats.

Where on the tank do I stick it?+

Stick the heat mat on the underside of the tank glass, on the side that will be the warm side. Cover no more than one third to one half of the floor area so the gecko or snake has a cool side to retreat to. The heat mat should sit flush against the glass with no air gap. The tank should sit on its plastic frame edges so the heat mat is not crushed against the shelf surface, which can cause overheating.

Can I use it under a 36x18 inch enclosure?+

The mini 4 watt mat is undersized for a 36 by 18 enclosure. The mat covers only 20 square inches, which is about 3 percent of the floor area, and the heat output is too small to hold a 90 degree warm side in a larger tank. For 36 by 18 enclosures, plan for the Zilla Heat Mat Medium or Large, or pair an under tank heat mat with an overhead basking lamp.

Will it work with an Inkbird thermostat?+

Yes. The standard 110 volt plug fits the Inkbird ITC-308 outlet and the thermostat controls the heat mat without modification. Plug the heat mat into the heating outlet on the Inkbird (the cooling outlet is for the opposite use case), set the target temperature on the Inkbird display, and place the probe on the warm side substrate inside the enclosure.
