Body mass index, basal metabolic rate, and daily calorie needs in one tool. Uses the Mifflin-St Jeor equation (most accurate for general population).
Body Mass Index = weight in kg รท (height in m)ยฒ. It's a quick screening tool, NOT a diagnosis. BMI is useful for tracking populations and trends but has well-known limitations for individuals:
Basal Metabolic Rate is the energy your body uses at complete rest โ heart, brain, organs, basic cell function. For a 30-year-old, 5'10", 170 lb male, BMR is around 1,700 calories/day. For the same demographics in female, it's around 1,400.
This calculator uses the Mifflin-St Jeor equation (1990), which is the current gold standard โ more accurate than the older Harris-Benedict for most populations.
Multiply BMR by an activity factor:
Most people overestimate their activity by one level. A 4-day-a-week gym session at moderate intensity is "moderate" โ not "very active."
