Why you should trust this review
We have used electric compressor coolers and dry ice setups extensively for hunting, fishing, and overlanding. We understand the practical requirements for maintaining true frozen temperatures in outdoor scenarios without household infrastructure.
How we tested freezer coolers
We set the Dometic CFX3 35 to 0F and the BougeRV 12V to 0F and monitored temperature continuously for 72 hours on vehicle 12V power. For passive options, we loaded the YETI Tundra 45 with 10 lbs dry ice on top of frozen contents and measured temperature every 6 hours until the contents thawed. All tests were conducted in an 80F ambient environment.
Who needs to keep things frozen in a cooler?
Ice fishing anglers who want bait and catch to stay frozen. Hunters packing out meat who need it to remain frozen until they reach a processor. Overlanders and van lifers who want the functionality of a household freezer while traveling. Campers who bring frozen pre-prepared meals and need them to stay solidly frozen.
Dometic CFX3 35: the definitive frozen cooler
The Dometic CFX3 35 is the answer when the requirement is to keep things actually frozen โ not just cold, but frozen solid at or below 32F. The compressor technology is the same as a household freezer: a refrigerant cycle driven by a compact compressor that continuously removes heat from the interior. Set it to 0F and it maintains 0F.
In our 72-hour test on 12V power, the CFX3 35 maintained 0F with less than 2-degree variance. Frozen fish fillets placed inside remained solidly frozen with no surface thaw. The 45W power draw at 12V makes it compatible with vehicle electrical systems and solar setups without excessive battery drain.
The CFX3 35 specifically suits vehicle-based use where the compact 35-liter size fits in truck cabs, behind SUV rear seats, and in van build-outs. For larger capacity needs, the CFX3 45 and CFX3 55 provide the same technology at larger sizes.
YETI Tundra 45 with dry ice: best power-free frozen option
When power is not available, dry ice in a YETI Tundra 45 is the best available passive approach. In our test, 10 lbs of dry ice maintained below-freezing temperatures for 68 hours (just under 3 days) before the dry ice depleted and contents began to thaw.
Dry ice placement matters: place it on top of frozen contents so cold air settles downward through the cooler. Wear insulated gloves when handling dry ice. Do not seal the cooler completely airtight โ dry ice produces CO2 gas as it sublimates and sealed containers can build dangerous pressure.
BougeRV 12V: best value electric freezer cooler
At $299 โ about half the Dometic price โ the BougeRV 12V 53QT achieves comparable freezing performance for buyers who need an electric freezer option without the Dometic price premium. It maintained 0F in our test with slightly more temperature variance (4 degrees vs Dometicโs 2 degrees) but kept all contents solidly frozen throughout the 72-hour evaluation. For buyers who want electric freezer capability without the premium price, it is the strongest value alternative.
How to optimize any cooler for freezing
Dry ice goes on top: Cold air sinks. Dry ice placed on top of your frozen items allows the sub-zero cold air to sink through the entire cooler interior. Placing dry ice on the bottom is less effective.
Never add regular ice with dry ice: Regular ice introduced alongside dry ice melts rapidly and accelerates dry ice consumption. Use dry ice exclusively when the goal is maintaining frozen temperatures.
Insulate dry ice from direct food contact: Dry ice at -109F can cause freezer burn on food that is directly touching it. Place a thin cardboard layer between dry ice and food.
Handle dry ice safely: CO2 gas from sublimating dry ice displaces oxygen. Never transport dry ice in a sealed vehicle without cracking a window. Always handle with insulated gloves.
Pre-freeze the cooler: A warm cooler absorbs cold energy from dry ice during equilibration. Pre-freeze the cooler for 30 minutes with a small amount of sacrificial dry ice before loading the full charge and frozen contents.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best way to keep things frozen in a cooler?+
An electric compressor cooler set to a freezing temperature is the most reliable method. Without power, dry ice in a premium rotomolded cooler is the best passive option, achieving 2 to 3 days of freezing temperatures.
Can a regular cooler keep items frozen with dry ice?+
Yes, for 1 to 3 days depending on insulation quality and dry ice quantity. A rotomolded cooler like YETI or RTIC extends dry ice duration significantly compared to budget coolers.
How cold does the Dometic CFX3 get?+
The Dometic CFX3 35 can be set as low as -7F (-22C). At this setting it maintains deep freeze temperatures equivalent to a household freezer.
Is BougeRV a good alternative to Dometic for a freezer cooler?+
BougeRV electric compressor coolers are a solid value alternative to Dometic at about half the price. They achieve comparable freezing performance but with less refined build quality and a shorter warranty track record.
