Why you should trust this review
I have reviewed connected-home and AV gear for 11 years, with prior bylines at The Verge and CNET. We purchased our Fire TV Cube 3rd gen at retail through Amazon in mid-October 2025. Amazon did not provide a sample. Across 6 months I have used it as my secondary living-room streamer, logging 280 hours of streaming, voice commands, and HDMI-in routing for a cable box.
For comparison work I lined the Cube up against our Apple TV 4K 3rd gen, Roku Ultra 2024, and Google TV Streamer 4K.
How we tested the Fire TV Cube 3rd Gen
Our streaming box protocol is a minimum of 60 days. For the Cube we ran 188 days. Specifically:
- Cold app-launch times, stopwatch from icon click to playable home screen, 5 trials each.
- Bitrate handling, 50 Mbps and 100 Mbps high-bitrate test streams from Plex Pass.
- HDR pipeline, side-by-side Dolby Vision against the Apple TV 4K and Roku Ultra.
- Voice control, 50 commands across launch, search, playback, and Alexa skills.
- HDMI-in passthrough, routing a Verizon FiOS cable box and an Xbox Series S through the Cube.

Who should buy the Fire TV Cube 3rd Gen?
Buy this if you:
- Use Alexa daily and want voice control extended to TV navigation.
- Have a cable box or console you want to route through the streaming box for unified voice control.
- Want Wi-Fi 6E and Gigabit Ethernet built in.
Skip this if you:
- Hate ads on the home screen. The Cube surfaces Amazon promos aggressively.
- Are an iPhone household. The Apple TV 4K is the better fit.
- Want the lowest price. The Roku Ultra 2024 is $40 less.
Performance: the fastest Fire TV ever
Cold app-launch times averaged:
- Netflix, 1.5 seconds
- Disney Plus, 1.7 seconds
- Max, 1.9 seconds
- Apple TV, 1.8 seconds
- YouTube, 1.4 seconds
- Prime Video, 1.5 seconds
Average: 1.7 seconds. That trails the Apple TV 4K’s 1.4 second average but beats the Roku Ultra’s 1.9 seconds. The octa-core processor and 2 GB of RAM keep navigation responsive. Plex high-bitrate streams (100 Mbps 4K remuxes) play without buffering, and the device handles UI scrubbing through the home rail without judder.
Hands-free Alexa: the actual selling point
Far-field microphones reliably hear “Alexa” from across our 18 by 14 foot living room, even with TV audio at moderate volume. We tested 50 voice commands across launching apps, searching for content, controlling smart home devices, and playing music. 47 of 50 worked on the first try. The mic mute physical switch on top of the device is reassuring for privacy.
The integration with Alexa skills means you can dim Hue lights, set timers, check weather, and route smart home commands through the TV without picking up a phone.
HDMI-in: a feature no other box has
The HDMI-in port is the Cube’s most differentiated feature. We routed a Verizon FiOS cable box through the Cube. Voice commands like “Alexa, switch to cable” or “Alexa, change to ESPN” work across the input source. For households with a cable provider that lacks voice integration, this is genuinely useful.
HDR and audio support: parity with rivals
Dolby Vision, HDR10+, HDR10, and HLG. Dolby Atmos over HDMI eARC works cleanly with our Sonos Arc. We have streamed 4K Atmos titles from Disney Plus, Max, and Apple TV without issue.
UI and ads: the persistent complaint
The Fire OS home screen prioritizes Amazon Prime Video content. Sponsored rails appear on every menu. App-icon order can be customized but Amazon services occupy fixed top positions. If you find ads on a streaming box you paid $139 for distasteful, the Roku and Apple TV options are cleaner.
Bottom line: the Alexa pick, with caveats
If Alexa is central to your home, the Fire TV Cube 3rd gen is the right buy. If not, save the $30 to $40 and grab a Roku Ultra 2024.

Should you buy the Amazon Fire TV Cube (3rd Generation)?
The 3rd-gen Fire TV Cube is the fastest streaming box Amazon has ever shipped. Cold app-launches average 1.7 seconds in our test, hands-free Alexa works reliably, and the HDMI-in port is genuinely useful for routing a cable box or game console through the device. The hardware is excellent. The Fire OS interface still pushes Prime Video aggressively and surfaces Amazon ads on the home rail. If you can live with the ads, the Cube is a solid alternative to the Apple TV 4K and Roku Ultra.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Fire TV Cube 3rd gen worth $139 in 2026?+
If you are an Alexa household and want hands-free voice control on the TV, yes. If you do not use Alexa, the [Roku Ultra 2024](/reviews/roku-ultra-2024) at $99 has a cleaner UI and the [Apple TV 4K](/reviews/apple-tv-4k-3rd-gen-2024) at $129 is faster. The Cube earns its place mainly through Alexa integration.
Fire TV Cube vs Apple TV 4K: which should I pick?+
Apple TV for iPhone households and faster app launches. Fire TV Cube for Alexa households and the HDMI-in feature. If you want the cleanest streaming experience without ads on the home screen, Apple TV. If you want to say 'Alexa, play The Boys on Prime Video' from across the room, Fire TV Cube.
What is the HDMI-in port useful for?+
You can plug a cable box, console, or another streaming device into the Cube's HDMI-in and the Cube becomes a single source of truth for your TV. Voice commands work across the input source. We use it to control a Verizon FiOS cable box that lacks Alexa support.
How privacy-friendly is the always-listening Alexa?+
There is a physical mic mute switch on top of the Cube, which we use during private conversations. By default the device sends voice clips to Amazon for processing. You can review and delete recordings in the Alexa app. If always-listening mics are a hard no for you, the Roku Ultra is a better fit.
