I have reviewed audio for 14 years across Engadget and What Hi-Fi. For this review, I purchased the SoundLink Flex Gen 2 at retail in October 2025. Bose did not provide a sample. Across 5 months I used this speaker for kitchen mornings, patio dinners, and a daily shower listening test, alongside the JBL Charge 6 and UE MEGABOOM 4 on the same bench.
Every measurement was performed in our acoustic space. Bose’s spec sheet was used only as a comparison reference.
How we tested the Bose SoundLink Flex Gen 2
See our methodology for the full protocol. For compact speakers specifically:
- Peak SPL at 1 meter: Calibrated dB meter, pink noise at 100 percent volume, 3 trials. Mean: 94 dB.
- Frequency response: Swept 20 Hz to 20 kHz at 50 percent volume, plotted against a flat target.
- Battery life: 50 percent volume, pink noise, played to shutdown. Mean of 3 trials: 11:54.
- IP67: 30 minute kitchen sink dunk plus 5 daily shower spray sessions. No ingress.
- PositionIQ: Tested 4 orientations (vertical, horizontal, on back, hung from strap), EQ measurably shifts within 1 dB across most of the spectrum.
Who should buy the Bose SoundLink Flex Gen 2?
Buy this if:
- You want the cleanest sounding small speaker for a kitchen, bedside, or shower.
- You travel and need a speaker that fits in a backpack with everything else.
- You appreciate Bose’s house tuning, neutral and forward, with controlled bass.
- You may want to pair multiple SoundLink speakers via the Bose Music app.
Skip this if:
- You need raw output for groups of 10 plus, get the Sony SRS-XG500 or UE MEGABOOM 4.
- You want maximum battery, the JBL Charge 6 doubles run time at $30 more.
- You want Wi-Fi multi-room and AirPlay 2, the Sonos Roam 2 is the better hybrid.
Sound quality: small speaker, real tuning
The SoundLink Flex Gen 2’s racetrack transducer plus dual passive radiator setup produces the most balanced sound I have heard in a sub-1 kg speaker. Mids are forward and resolved, vocals on Norah Jones tracks land with body and clarity that JBL’s Charge 6 does not match. Treble is detailed without harshness, and the soundstage is wider than the small grille would suggest.
PositionIQ is not a marketing gimmick. We tested 4 orientations with a calibrated mic, and the EQ measurably shifts to compensate for the change in driver-to-listener geometry. On its side, mid-bass becomes slightly more prominent. Hung from the strap, the EQ recovers some upper-mid presence. It is the kind of detail that makes the Flex feel engineered rather than assembled.
Loudness and bass: where physics wins
Peak SPL of 94 dB at 1 meter is enough for a kitchen, patio, or bedroom. It is not enough for a 12 person backyard party, where the UE MEGABOOM 4 at 102 dB is the better tool. Bass extension to 65 Hz is honest, sub-bass content below 50 Hz is reproduced with reduced amplitude rather than full cone excursion, which keeps distortion low at the cost of weight.
Battery and build
Bose rates 12 hours. We measured 11:54 at 50 percent volume across 3 trials, within 1 percent of spec. At 80 percent volume, expect 6 to 7 hours.
The IP67 rating is genuine. After 5 months of shower mounting and one 30 minute kitchen sink dunk, the Flex shows no internal water damage and the silicone strap loop is intact. The fabric grille has minor staining from kitchen splash, but it brushes clean with a damp cloth.

How is the SoundLink Flex bass at low volumes?+
Excellent for the size class. The dual passive radiators push useful response to 65 Hz, and Bose's tuning maintains bass weight even at 30 percent volume, where many small speakers thin out. For sub-bass content (kick drums on hip hop, synth bass below 50 Hz), the form factor still limits extension.
Should I upgrade from the SoundLink Flex Gen 1?+
Probably not unless you need Bluetooth 5.3 and PositionIQ. The Gen 2 brings improved app-side EQ, multipoint between 2 devices, and a refined acoustic signature, but Gen 1 still sounds 90 percent as good and is often $99 on sale.
