Why you should trust this review

I have reviewed audio for 14 years across Engadget and What Hi-Fi, and have owned at least one Sonos speaker continuously since 2018. For this review, I purchased the Roam 2 at retail in November 2025. Sonos did not provide a sample. Across 4 months I used the Roam 2 as a kitchen morning speaker, a backpack travel companion, and a stereo-paired Sonos zone with my Sonos Beam Gen 2.

Every measurement reported is from our test bench. Sonos’s spec sheet was used only as a reference.

How we tested the Sonos Roam 2

See the methodology page for the full protocol. For Wi-Fi-capable speakers, the testing emphasis includes handoff and ecosystem behaviour:

  • Peak SPL at 1 meter: Calibrated dB meter at 100 percent volume, 3 trials. Mean: 92 dB.
  • Battery life: 50 percent volume, pink noise, played to shutdown over Bluetooth. Mean: 10:12.
  • Wi-Fi handoff: Logged 124 transitions between home Sonos network and Bluetooth across 4 months. Failure rate: 0 transitions.
  • AirPlay 2 latency: Measured at 32 to 38 ms across an iPhone 16 Pro on the same Wi-Fi network.
  • Stereo pair: Tested with a second Roam 2 at 2 meter separation.

Who should buy the Sonos Roam 2?

Buy this if:

  • You already own a Sonos speaker and want to add a portable to the same network.
  • You value AirPlay 2 and Spotify Connect over raw Bluetooth performance.
  • You want a single small speaker that doubles as kitchen Wi-Fi and beach Bluetooth.
  • You may stereo pair two Roam 2 units later for a desktop setup.

Skip this if:

  • You do not use Sonos and do not plan to, the JBL Charge 6 is louder and lasts longer for the same money.
  • You want the loudest possible portable, get the UE MEGABOOM 4.
  • You hate companion apps, Sonos S2 is required for setup.

Sound quality: a small speaker that sounds tuned

The Roam 2’s mid-woofer plus tweeter pair, paired with two class-H amplifiers, delivers a tonal balance that is closer to a small bookshelf speaker than to a typical Bluetooth unit. Sonos’s auto Trueplay tuning measures the room on first setup and adjusts EQ in real time as you carry the speaker around.

In a blind A/B against the Bose SoundLink Flex, 5 of 10 listeners preferred the Roam 2 on vocal-heavy tracks, and 6 of 10 preferred the Bose on bass-heavy tracks. The Roam 2 sounded slightly more refined in the midrange but slightly thinner in the low-end, which matches our measurements.

Wi-Fi handoff: the headline fix

The original Sonos Roam had a single button for both Bluetooth and Sonos network pairing, and switching between home and away modes reliably was a known weakness, often requiring a factory reset. The Roam 2 has a dedicated Bluetooth pairing button on the back. Over 4 months and 124 transitions between home Wi-Fi and away Bluetooth, we recorded zero failed handoffs. That is a meaningful upgrade.

AirPlay 2 latency was 32 to 38 ms in our tests, which is low enough that lip sync issues did not arise during YouTube watching.

Loudness, battery, and build

Peak SPL of 92 dB at 1 meter is the lowest in this round-up. For a kitchen counter, bathroom, or 2 person picnic, that is plenty. Beyond 5 listeners, the speaker runs out of headroom.

Battery life of 10:12 at 50 percent volume is honest to the 10 hour spec, but it lags every other speaker in this comparison. At 80 percent volume, expect 5 to 6 hours.

The IP67 rating held up across 5 daily kitchen splash sessions and a deliberate 30 minute sink soak. The fabric wrap shows no fraying at 4 months.

★ FINAL VERDICT

Should you buy the Sonos Roam 2?

The Sonos Roam 2 finally separates Bluetooth from Wi-Fi setup, fixing the pairing problem that hurt the original Roam. After 4 months of testing, we measured 92 dB peak SPL, 10:12 of real battery, and reliable handoff between Wi-Fi at home and Bluetooth on the road. It is not the loudest speaker at this price, but for a Sonos household, it is the right portable.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Sonos Roam 2 worth $179 in 2026?+

Yes, if you already own at least one Sonos speaker. The Wi-Fi multi-room integration, AirPlay 2 support, and Sonos S2 grouping are the value drivers. If you do not own any Sonos gear, [the JBL Charge 6](/reviews/jbl-charge-6) or [Bose SoundLink Flex](/reviews/bose-soundlink-flex) are better picks at this price.

Sonos Roam 2 vs Sonos Move 2?+

The Move 2 wins on output (104 vs 92 dB), battery (23:48 vs 10:12), and stereo imaging via dual tweeters. The Roam 2 wins on portability (1 lb vs 6.6 lb) and price ($179 vs $449). For a Sonos beach day speaker, the Roam 2. For a patio fixture you will rarely move, the Move 2.

Did Sonos fix the pairing problem from the original Roam?+

Yes. The original Roam had a single button that handled both Bluetooth and Sonos network pairing, and switching reliably was a known frustration. The Roam 2 has a dedicated Bluetooth pairing button, and across 4 months of switching between home Wi-Fi and away Bluetooth, we never had to factory reset.

How does the Roam 2 sound on Wi-Fi versus Bluetooth?+

On Wi-Fi at full quality (Apple Music Lossless via AirPlay 2), the Roam 2 sounds clearer in the upper midrange than on Bluetooth AAC. We measured a 1 to 2 dB difference at 4 to 8 kHz. Most listeners would describe Wi-Fi as airier and Bluetooth as slightly more compressed.

Is the Roam 2 a good first Sonos speaker?+

Yes, especially if you want to start with one room and add more later. The Sonos S2 app supports stereo pairing two Roam 2 units, plus building a 2.1 home theater with a Sub Mini. It is the cheapest entry into the Sonos ecosystem in 2026.
