The DEWALT DWE6423K is the random orbit sander I keep on the truck. The Bosch lives in the shop because it is slightly smoother and quieter, but the DEWALT lives in the truck because it is tougher. Sixteen months of jobsite use have included two waist-height drops onto concrete, sanding pressure-treated deck boards in steady rain (under cover, but humid), and the steady drip of finish-carpentry sanding work that any small remodel job demands. None of it has affected the DEWALT.

Why you should trust this review

I run a small finish carpentry crew. I bought the DWE6423K at retail to replace an aging Porter-Cable random orbit that finally lost its pad-brake. The DEWALT has been my primary jobsite sander for 16 months, alongside the Bosch ROS20VSC in the shop. The two-sander split lets me directly compare the tools across identical materials. None of the testing was sponsored by DEWALT.

How we tested the DWE6423K

  • Sanded a 200 sq ft pressure-treated deck from 80 grit through 120 grit before applying stain.
  • Refinished six interior trim pieces from 100 grit through 220 grit.
  • Sanded the underside of a homeownerโ€™s plywood subfloor in cramped crawlspace conditions.
  • Sanded a maple cabinet door in direct comparison against the Bosch ROS20VSC on the same door, half each.
  • Dropped the unit twice onto concrete from waist height during normal jobsite work.
  • Verified pad runout against a dial indicator at month 0 and month 16.
  • See our methodology page for the standard procedure.

Who should buy the DEWALT DWE6423K?

Buy this sander if you are a working contractor or remodeler who needs a sander that survives jobsite use. Buy it if you do exterior deck refinishing where dust gets everywhere and the tool gets rained on once in a while. Buy it if your previous sander died from being dropped or jostled.

Skip this sander if you do all your sanding in a clean shop environment (the Bosch ROS20VSC is slightly smoother and quieter), if you need cordless (the DCW210 is the cordless DEWALT equivalent), or if you do high-volume finish work where the Festool ETS 125 saves enough time to pay for itself.

Sanding smoothness

The DWE6423K leaves a clean finish on most materials. On a maple cabinet door tested half-and-half against the Bosch ROS20VSC, the Bosch left a slightly smoother surface (visible only under raking light), and the DEWALT was not far behind. For practical purposes, both sanders produce finish-ready surfaces that take stain or paint without visible swirl marks.

Variable speed and pad-brake

The OPM range is 8000-12000, slightly narrower at the low end than the Bosch (7500-12000). The dial is positive and easy to turn. The pad-brake works but is less aggressive than the Bosch pad-brake. On the DEWALT, the pad takes a couple seconds to slow to stop after liftoff. On the Bosch, it stops faster. In practice this means the DEWALT is slightly more prone to leaving a swirl mark when you touch the surface during liftoff.

Build quality and durability

This is where the DEWALT earns its keep. The rubber overmold body is the most rugged in the 5-inch class. After 16 months of jobsite use including two drops, the sander has no cracks, no loose components, and no functional issues. The 3-year warranty (vs 1 year for the Bosch) reflects this build quality.

Dust collection

The dust bag works for finish sanding but fills quickly under heavy sanding. The vac adapter accepts standard 1-1/4 inch shop vac hose, which is the right setup for serious sanding work. The bag is the part of this tool I have replaced once in 16 months (the bag fabric tore from sustained heavy use).

Vibration

Vibration is moderate, slightly higher than the Bosch ROS20VSC and meaningfully higher than the Festool ETS 125. For 30-minute sanding sessions the vibration is manageable. For all-day refinishing work I would consider vibration-damping gloves.

Verdict context

Against the Bosch ROS20VSC and the Festool ETS 125, the DEWALT is the jobsite-tough pick. Pros doing rough work should buy this. Shop woodworkers should buy the Bosch. Production cabinet shops should buy the Festool.

โ˜… FINAL VERDICT

Should you buy the DEWALT DWE6423K 3-Amp 5-Inch Random Orbit Sander Kit?

The DWE6423K is the random orbit sander to buy if you want a tool that survives jobsite drops, dust, and rough handling. The 3-amp motor delivers 8000-12000 OPM with variable speed, the rubber overmold makes one-hand sanding comfortable, and the dust bag system handles finish sanding cleanly. Slightly less refined than the Bosch ROS20VSC but more rugged.

Frequently asked questions

Is the DEWALT DWE6423K worth $79 in 2026?+

Yes for jobsite use, deck refinishing, and DIY furniture work. At $79 with a 3-year warranty, the DEWALT is one of the best-value sanders in the 5-inch class. Slightly less refined than the Bosch ROS20VSC but more rugged for rough handling.

DWE6423K vs Bosch ROS20VSC: which is better?+

The Bosch is slightly smoother, has a better pad-brake, and has a more useful dust canister. The DEWALT has a 3-year warranty (vs 1 year for the Bosch), a tougher rubber overmold body, and is $10 cheaper. Choose the Bosch for shop work, the DEWALT for jobsite or rough use.

How well does the DEWALT survive jobsite drops?+

After 16 months of jobsite use, my unit has been dropped on concrete twice from waist height with no functional damage. The rubber overmold absorbs impact, and the motor housing is robust. The Bosch ROS20VSC would not have survived the same drops as cleanly.

Should I get the kit version with the bag?+

Yes. The DWE6423K is the 'kit' version that includes the dust bag and a soft case. The DWE6423 (no K) is the bare tool without these accessories. The kit is only a few dollars more and the bag is genuinely useful.
