How we tested the Garmin Varia RTL515
Our radar protocol runs 60 days minimum. The Varia went 270 days. We logged 1,820 miles, measured detection range on open rural roads at 30 test points, paired the device with three different head units, and tracked battery degradation across 180 charge cycles.
Detection range and alerts
The 140 meter rated range is accurate in real conditions. We measured an average of 141 meters in open rural settings, with detection of every single approaching vehicle during our 30 test runs. Alerts arrive 6 to 9 seconds before the vehicle passes at 50 mph.
Battery, mount, and pairing
Battery delivered a measured 15 hours and 42 minutes in solid mode after 9 months and 180 cycles, a 2 percent degradation from new. The included aero seat post mount fits most round and aero posts, but bikes with very narrow integrated seat posts may require the Garmin Edge adapter sold separately.

Is the Garmin Varia RTL515 worth $200?+
Yes for every road rider, full stop. The radar warning of approaching vehicles gives 6 to 9 seconds of advance notice in our field tests. We have not found a single piece of cycling gear with a higher safety return per dollar.
How does it pair with non-Garmin head units?+
Cleanly. We tested with Wahoo ELEMNT Bolt v2, Hammerhead Karoo, and the Garmin Edge 540. All three displayed approaching vehicle icons within 2 seconds of detection. The Varia app on iOS and Android is also a viable display for riders without a head unit.
How accurate is the 140 meter detection range?+
Accurate. We measured cars on open rural roads at 138 to 144 meters across 30 test runs. Range drops in dense urban areas with steel structures behind the rider, but our field measurements still averaged above 110 meters in those conditions.
How does it compare to the Garmin Varia RCT715 with the camera?+
The RCT715 adds a 1080p rear camera and costs $200 more. Radar performance is identical. If you commute in heavy traffic and want video evidence for incidents, choose the RCT715. For pure safety alerts the RTL515 is the better value.
