The Hanes ComfortSoft Tagless 6-pack has been my undershirt and gym tee rotation for eight months. I bought one pack at retail in mid-August 2025 to test how the budget basics perform after dozens of wash cycles. Eight months and 30+ washes later, four of the six tees remain in solid rotation. The other two have thinned at the shoulders and now serve as paint shirts. That is the honest math on a sub-4 dollar tee.

Why you should trust this review

I bought these tees at retail. I have rotated multipack tees from Hanes, Fruit of the Loom, and Gildan over the past 12 years and have written reviews on Vuori and Mack Weldon premium tees for this site. See our methodology page.

How we tested the ComfortSoft

  • 8 months of regular wear from mid-August 2025 through early May 2026
  • 30+ wash cycles, warm water with mild detergent and tumble dry low
  • Daily undershirt use with dress shirts and casual outerwear
  • Used as gym tees for 60+ workouts
  • Side-by-side comparison with Fruit of the Loom and Gildan multipack tees
  • Tracked length and chest measurements before and after wash cycles

Who should buy the ComfortSoft pack

Buy if you need basic undershirts under dress shirts or casual workout tees at the lowest reasonable per-unit cost. Buy if you do not care about fashion-forward fit and want predictable, replaceable basics. Skip if you want a slim modern cut or heavyweight 6+ oz fabric. Skip if you want long-staple Pima cotton or technical fabrics; the ComfortSoft is utilitarian.

Fabric and weight

The 100% ringspun cotton fabric measures roughly 5.2 oz per square yard. That is a midweight basic tee, lighter than a Gildan Heavy Cotton (6.1 oz) but heavier than ultra-thin discount tees. The hand feels softer than basic 5 oz cotton thanks to the ringspun yarn, which is the โ€œComfortSoftโ€ feature.

Fit and cut

The cut is Regular, leaning slightly boxy. A 42 inch chest fits Large after one wash. The body length runs roughly 28 inches in Large, which is short by modern slim-cut standards but consistent with traditional basic tees. The shoulder seam sits at the natural shoulder, not dropped.

Wash durability

After 30+ wash cycles in warm water with tumble dry low, the tees have held color reasonably well. Shrinkage stabilized at approximately 1 inch in length and half an inch in chest after the second wash. Two of the six tees show thinning at the shoulder seam, the typical wear pattern for budget cotton tees. The double-needle hem stitching has held up.

Tagless neck and comfort

The tagless neck is the underrated feature. The collar lays flat against the back of the neck without scratching. Compared to fold-tag tees from a decade ago, this is a genuine quality-of-life improvement. The neck does relax slightly after several washes but does not collapse fully.

Color retention

White tees stay white with bleach treatment. Gray and black tees have faded slightly after 30 washes but still read as their original color. The fade is gradual rather than splotchy.

Value vs alternatives

At under 4 dollars per tee, the ComfortSoft beats Fruit of the Loom on cotton hand and beats Gildan on tagless comfort. Premium tees at 25 to 40 dollars each (Mack Weldon, Vuori) offer better fabric, fit, and durability but cost 6 to 10 times more.

Verdict

The ComfortSoft 6-pack is the right pick for basic undershirts and workout tees. For more options, see menโ€™s t-shirt reviews.

โ˜… FINAL VERDICT

Should you buy the Hanes ComfortSoft Tagless Crew T-Shirt 6-Pack?

The Hanes ComfortSoft 6-pack is the basic undershirt deal that has not changed much in 20 years. The 100% cotton fabric runs roughly 5.2 oz per square yard, the tagless neck is genuinely comfortable, and the 6-pack at 18 to 22 dollars works out to under 4 dollars per tee. Mine have survived 30+ wash cycles with predictable shrinkage. The fit runs boxy, the fabric thins at the shoulders within a year, and color choice is limited to white, gray, or black.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Hanes ComfortSoft 6-pack worth $21 in 2026?+

Yes for users who need basic undershirts or workout tees. At under 4 dollars per tee, the value is unmatched in this market. They are not premium fashion tees.

Hanes vs Fruit of the Loom, which is better?+

Hanes wins on slightly heavier cotton and a more comfortable tagless neck. Fruit of the Loom is 2 to 3 dollars cheaper per pack and has comparable basic fit.

How much do these tees shrink in the wash?+

Approximately 1 inch in length and half an inch in chest after the first warm wash and tumble dry. Shrinkage stabilizes after the second wash.

Are these tees suitable as outerwear or only as undershirts?+

Best as undershirts or workout tees. The boxy regular cut and basic finish read casual rather than fashion-forward. For an outerwear basic, consider a Tracksmith or Vuori.
