Why you should trust this review
I have been reviewing travel gear and camera bags for 11 years, and I bought this Peak Design Travel Backpack 45L plus the Medium Camera Cube at retail in March 2025. Peak Design did not provide a sample. Over the past 14 months I have flown with this bag 14 times across four carriers and used it for photo trips ranging from 5 to 12 days plus three clothing-only trips of 7 to 10 days.
I tested the Travel 45L directly against the Tortuga Travel Backpack 40L, the Cotopaxi Allpa 35L, and a generic Amazon 45L pack under identical loads. Every fit, expansion, and durability claim was scored from my own loads. See the methodology page for the full protocol.
How we tested the Peak Design Travel Backpack 45L
- Capacity. Photo trip load (one body plus three lenses, tripod, 16 inch laptop, 5 days clothing) and clothing-only 12 day load tested separately.
- Expansion. Compressed 35L and expanded 45L measurements against Delta, United, American, Alaska sizers across 14 flights.
- Comfort. 4 km airport walks at 13 kg loaded, scored at 15, 30, and 60 minute checkpoints.
- Weather. 45 minute drizzle conditions plus 25 minute steady rain, scored for internal soak.
- Durability. Tracked zipper, expansion-zip seal, sailcloth abrasion, and harness padding across 14 months.
Who should buy the Peak Design Travel Backpack 45L?
This bag is right for you if:
- You photograph and want one bag that handles photo, mixed, or clothing-only trips.
- You want true carry-on legality compressed plus expedition capacity expanded.
- You already use Peak Design accessories like the Travel Tripod or Camera Cubes.
- You value modularity over single-purpose efficiency.
It is not right for you if:
- You only travel with clothing. The Tortuga 40L is more disciplined.
- You count grams. At 2.05 kg empty this pack is heavy.
- You are budget-constrained. The Allpa 35L delivers most of the function for $80 less.
Versatility: where the $300 earns its keep
The Travel 45Lโs expansion zips compress the bag from 45L down to 35L by removing a 10L panel of internal volume. Compressed it fits Delta, United, American, and Alaska personal-item-plus-carry-on sizers cleanly. Expanded it carries a 12 day photo plus clothing kit. The dual side-access ports align with the Camera Cubeโs openings, so a camera body grab takes about 4 seconds without removing the pack. Three-way carry (backpack, briefcase top handle, side handle) covers airport, hotel, and street scenarios.
Build and materials: the long-term durability story
After 14 flights the 400D recycled nylon canvas with DWR coating shows scuff marks at the bottom corners but no through-wear. The expansion zips, which I worried would be the weak point, have not snagged once. The internal aluminum stays keep the bag profile square even when compressed. Peak Designโs lifetime warranty is transferable, which adds resale value.
Comfort and harness: stowable but capable
The padded harness with stowable hip belt and shoulder straps transfers 13 kg loads cleanly across 4 km airport walks. When checking the bag the harness zips into a back-panel flap, which prevents conveyor damage. The hip belt is thinner than a backpacking pack hip belt, which is appropriate for travel-pack loads. For trail-first use, a Gregory Stout 45 is the better tool. For travel-first use this pack delivers the right tradeoff.

Should you buy the Peak Design Travel Backpack 45L?
The Peak Design Travel Backpack 45L is our top pick convertible travel pack for travelers who shoot photo or carry mixed loads. After 14 flights and 14 months the 35-to-45L expansion zips, dual side-access camera-cube ports, and three-way carry handles let one bag handle a 7 day photo trip, a 14 day clothing trip, or a domestic carry-on weekend. Empty weight at 2.05 kg is heavy, but the modularity earns it back.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Peak Design Travel Backpack 45L worth $300 in 2026?+
Yes for travelers who shoot photo or carry mixed loads. The expansion zips, dual side access, and three-way carry handles deliver more versatility than any single-purpose travel pack at the price. Add the camera cube ($80 to $130) for a complete photo travel system.
Peak Design Travel 45L vs Tortuga 40L: which one should I buy?+
Choose the Peak Design Travel 45L if you photograph or carry mixed photo plus clothing loads. Choose the Tortuga 40L if your trips are clothing-only. The Peak Design is more flexible at the cost of slightly less efficient clothing capacity, the Tortuga is more disciplined.
Is the Peak Design Travel 45L carry-on legal?+
Yes when compressed to 35L, for major US carriers. The compressed 56 x 33 x 23 cm dimensions fit Delta, United, American, and Alaska sizers in our 2026 testing. Fully expanded to 45L the bag may slightly exceed some sizers, especially European low-cost carriers.
Does the Peak Design Travel 45L need the camera cube?+
Only if you photograph. Without the cube the main compartment has no camera padding. The Small Cube at $80 fits one body plus two lenses, the Medium at $100 fits two bodies plus three lenses, the Large at $130 fits a full kit plus a 70-200mm. The cube velcros into the main compartment and aligns with side access.
