Why we tested the RockyMounts Splitrail
The platform hitch rack category has clear premium and budget poles, but the middle is where most buyers actually live. We tested the Splitrail to see if a $449 rack delivers a real premium experience.
What we liked
It works. The ratchet hook holds the front tire firm, the tilt lever drops the rack for hatch access, and the bikes ride steady on the highway. Nothing about the daily use experience reminded us we paid less than for a Thule.
What could be better
The action of the ratcheting hook is slightly stiffer than the premium racks, and the powder coat is not quite as deep. These are cosmetic and tactile differences, not functional ones.
Value
At $449 the RockyMounts Splitrail Hitch Rack is the right Sports & Outdoors in 2026.

Should you buy the RockyMounts Splitrail Hitch Rack?
The RockyMounts Splitrail is the platform rack you buy when the Thule and Kuat prices give you sticker shock but the Allen hanging racks make you nervous. It clamps the front tire with a ratcheting hook, accepts tires up to 3 inches wide stock, and tilts down for trunk access with bikes loaded. Capacity is 60 pounds per tray which covers standard e-bikes, and at $449 it undercuts every premium competitor by $150 or more. After 6 months we have no functional complaints.

The core experience is similar. The Thule has a smoother feel and a more refined finish, but the Splitrail does the same job for about $300 less.
Is there a 1.25 inch hitch version?+
Yes. RockyMounts offers the Splitrail in both 1.25 inch and 2 inch receivers.
Will it carry an e-bike?+
Yes up to 60 pounds per tray. Standard commuter and e-MTB models with 500Wh batteries are within range.
