Why you should trust this review

I have been mowing the same half acre suburban lot for the better part of a decade across gas mowers, two prior EGO 56V models, and a Greenworks 80V test unit. The LM2135SP arrived as a refresh of the LM2156SP, EGOโ€™s earlier flagship self-propelled, and I ran it across a full spring with two crew cuts on tall first growth, three full bag-and-mulch cycles, and one wet mow after an overnight storm. We purchased the unit at retail to keep the editorial relationship clean.

This review draws on roughly 200 hours behind cordless mowers across the past three seasons, plus a stopwatch, a sound meter, and the same test lot used in our EGO LM2156SP review for direct comparison. For the standardized testing protocol see The Tested Hub methodology page.

How we tested the LM2135SP

  • Cut time per 7.5 Ah charge across three full mowing sessions on dry 3 inch fescue.
  • Wet grass mow at 6 inch tall first growth after an overnight storm.
  • Drive dial behavior across the full speed range using a marked 100 ft path with a stopwatch.
  • Operator ear noise reading at 3 ft using a calibrated sound meter at the handlebar.
  • Storage footprint vertical and horizontal measured against a chalk outline on the garage floor.
  • Bag fill rate counted by full empties across the full lot at 3 inch cut height.

Who should buy the LM2135SP?

Buy the EGO LM2135SP if:

  • You have a quarter acre to half acre suburban lot.
  • You want the most refined drive feel in the EGO 21 inch self-propelled lineup.
  • You value vertical storage in a tight garage and a 5 year tool warranty.
  • You can carry a 75 lb mower up a ramp or stairs once in a while.

Skip the LM2135SP if:

  • Your lot is under 5,000 sq ft. The Sun Joe MJ401E corded costs a fraction and works fine at that scale.
  • You want the cheapest decent cordless mower. The Ryobi 40V saves real money with workable performance.
  • You already own the LM2156SP. The drive refinement is real but does not justify a side-grade purchase.

Cut quality: refined, not reinvented

On dry 3 inch fescue at a 3 inch cut height, the LM2135SP produced clean even cut tips with no obvious tearing across our entire test lawn. The 21 inch steel deck still does the airflow work mulching needs. Side discharge throws clippings far enough that you do not double-cut on the next pass.

On the wet mow run after an overnight storm, the brushless motor briefly bogged on the heaviest patch and recovered within roughly half a second once we eased the dial back to about 40 percent. That recovery curve is the difference between a cordless mower that works in real conditions and one that frustrates you into the garage.

Drive feel: the headline upgrade

The variable speed dial is the right control for a self-propelled mower, and EGO has tuned it well on the LM2135SP. Trigger-actuated systems force you to commit to top speed any time you squeeze, which is awkward on inclines or near garden beds. The dial lets you preset a comfortable pace and walk steadily. Compared to the older LM2156SP, the dial response feels more linear in the bottom third of the range, which is exactly where most owners actually mow. Top speed at 3.1 mph is faster than I want to walk on most lawns, so I usually run at about 60 percent.

Handle vibration is also lower than the older mower. After a full half acre at the previous EGO I noticed mild hand fatigue. After the same run on the LM2135SP I did not.

Battery and runtime: real numbers

The 7.5 Ah pack delivered 58 minutes average cut time on dry grass across three runs. Wet first mow at 6 inch grass dropped runtime to about 41 minutes which is expected. Charge time on the included 550W rapid charger ran about 60 minutes from empty to full, which neatly matches a single mowing session if you want to top up before the next pass.

After a full spring of cycling, the battery tested at about 96 percent of day one capacity using EGOโ€™s built in fuel gauge across multiple runs. That is normal lithium-ion behavior. The 5 year tool warranty plus 3 year battery warranty is more generous than every gas mower in this price band.

Storage and ergonomics

Folded for storage, the mower stands vertically on its rear wheels with the handle locked in place. That trick saves about 4 sq ft of garage floor versus a horizontal stored push mower. The rubber pads on the rear handle protect the wall when the mower stands. The handle latches click into three positions and felt secure across a season.

Battery latch ergonomics are improved over the older LM2156SP. One hand opens the cover and lifts the pack out cleanly which matters when you also hold a charger or a key.

Build quality and noise

The deck is steel, not plastic, which is part of why the unit weighs about 75 lb with battery and which is also why it cuts cleanly under load. After a full spring the deck has shown grass-acid staining (normal) but no rust on the cut surface.

Operator ear noise measured 74 dB at the handle at full motor load, which is roughly a third of the perceived loudness of a typical gas mower in the 92 to 96 dB range. I mowed at 7 AM on a Saturday without waking anyone in the house. That alone changes how the mower fits into a weekly routine.

Value vs the older LM2156SP

The LM2135SP costs roughly $50 more than the older LM2156SP at typical sale pricing. The refinements (smoother dial, lower vibration, easier battery latch) are real but small. If you already own the LM2156SP, keep it. If you are choosing for the first time, the newer model is the one to pick at full retail. If you find the older model on sale at $499 or below, the savings are worth the small ergonomic step back.

โ˜… FINAL VERDICT

Should you buy the EGO Power Plus LM2135SP 21-Inch Self-Propelled Cordless Lawn Mower?

The EGO LM2135SP refines the formula that made earlier EGO 56V mowers credible gas replacements. The variable speed self-propel dial feels smoother than the LM2150, the 21 inch steel deck still cuts tall grass cleanly, and the included 7.5 Ah battery delivers about 60 minutes of cut time which covered our half acre lot in a single charge. Vertical storage saves real garage floor space.

Frequently asked questions

Is the LM2135SP worth $649 in 2026?+

Yes if you have a quarter to half acre lot and you want a battery mower that genuinely replaces a gas mower. The drive dial is smoother than the older [LM2156SP](/reviews/ego-power-plus-mower-21), the 7.5 Ah pack lasts a full session, and the 5 year warranty is rare in the cordless class.

How is the LM2135SP different from the older LM2156SP?+

The LM2135SP refines the drive system. The dial response is more linear, the handle vibration is reduced, and the battery latch is easier to open with one hand. Cut quality is similar. The price premium is for the drive refinement and a slightly updated charger.

How long does the 7.5 Ah battery last in real use?+

We measured about 58 minutes of cut time on dry 3 inch fescue and roughly 41 minutes in tall, wet first mows. Cool spring weather around 50 F dropped runtime by about 4 minutes which is normal for lithium-ion.

Will it mulch wet spring grass?+

Yes with care. Drop the speed dial to about half and switch to side discharge for tall, wet grass. Mulching mode wants two passes in those conditions. The 21 inch steel deck still tunnels clippings cleanly which is the part most plastic-deck mowers fail.
