Suburban front yards under 2,500 square feet, rowhouse strip lawns, and townhome patches are everywhere, and most of them do not need a 21-inch self-propelled cordless mower. They need a cheap, light, reliable mower that fits in a hall closet. The MJ401E is that mower.
I tested the MJ401E on a 1,500 sq ft front yard for a full season alongside the larger cordless test units. On weekly maintenance mows the small lot was a 14 minute job from cord-out to cord-in, including bag dumps. That is faster than rolling out a self-propelled cordless mower would have been on the same lot, mostly because the deck is small enough to maneuver freely around shrubs and beds without committing to passes.
What Sun Joe claims
Sun Joe sells the MJ401E as a 12 amp corded electric with a 14-inch deck, three cut height positions from 1.6 to 3.0 inches, a 10.6 gallon rear bag, and a 2 year warranty. The marketing positions it for “small to medium” lawns. Our season of testing suggests “small” is the honest word and “medium” stretches it.
The 12 amp motor numbers tracked. Working noise at the operator ear position measured roughly 81 dB which is louder than a brushless cordless mower but well below a gas mower. We did not trip the thermal cutoff in normal weekly cuts but we did trigger a brief power dip when forcing a tall grass pass.
Who should buy
Buy the Sun Joe MJ401E if:
- Your lot is under 2,500 sq ft.
- You have a power outlet within 100 ft of every part of the lawn.
- You want the cheapest viable mower that actually works.
- You value zero-maintenance: no battery to charge, no fuel to mix.
Skip the MJ401E if:
- Your lot is over 3,000 sq ft. The cord becomes a constant tangle.
- You have lots of obstacles (raised beds, fences, slopes). Cord management gets hard.
- You want a self-propelled mower for hill work. The MJ401E is push-only.
- You want a real cordless setup. Step up to the Ryobi 40V.
Cut quality: surprisingly clean for the price
On dry fescue at 2.5 inch cut height the MJ401E produced clean cut tips across the 14 inch deck. The blade is a single bar style which is appropriate for a budget mower. Mulching is not really a thing on this unit, the deck design lifts and discharges to bag rather than recirculating. That is fine for small lots where bagging is the normal workflow.
The smaller deck width is the real constraint. A 1,500 sq ft lot took 14 minutes including a bag dump. A 2,500 sq ft lot would land closer to 25 minutes. Beyond that the cord and the deck width compound on each other and the experience gets frustrating.
Cord handling: the limit you will plan around
The cord is the entire challenge of corded electric mowing. We used a 50 ft 14 gauge outdoor extension at the front yard and never had cord-tangle issues because the lot is small enough to walk a single direction with the cord trailing on the offside. On larger lots the cord becomes a hazard, both for trip and for the blade.
The unit does not include a cord retainer hook on the handle. Most users tie the cord into a loop through the handle’s side cutouts, which works. A retainer would be a small but meaningful upgrade.
Storage and ergonomics
At 29 lb the MJ401E is the lightest mower in our test pool. It folds with a single lever per side and stands compact enough to fit in a closet, on a basement shelf, or in the corner of a small garage. The handle is plastic and the handgrips have visible wear after a season. None of that affected operation. The bag held up cleanly with no fabric tears.
Build and the corded electric tradeoff
A corded electric mower is the simplest possible mower. There is no battery to wear out, no fuel to mix, no oil to change, no ignition system to fail. After a season of weekly use the MJ401E started on the first squeeze every time. The motor showed no measurable power loss. The blade required one sharpening at the season midpoint which is normal for any mower.
The tradeoff is that corded electric mowers do not scale up. They are good at being cheap, light, simple, and small. They are bad at being big or fast. Match your lot to the tool and the MJ401E earns its $129 across many seasons.
