Why this product
The EGO Power Plus 21-inch self-propelled is the cordless mower that crossed the credibility line for me. After a full spring across a half-acre yard, two crew cuts on tall spring grass, and three full bag-and-mulch cycles, I am no longer recommending it as โa good cordless optionโ. It is just a good mower that happens to be cordless. That is the moment the category arrived.
The headline is the 56V brushless motor paired with the included 7.5 Ah lithium pack, which delivered roughly 60 minutes of cut time in normal conditions. That covered our half-acre suburban test lot in one charge with about 12 minutes of margin. Comparable cordless mowers we have tested either ship with a smaller battery, top out earlier on tall grass, or feel underpowered on the self-propel. The EGO does not.
What EGO claims
EGO sells the LM2156SP as a 21-inch self-propelled three-in-one mower with a 56V Arc Lithium brushless motor, a steel deck, vertical storage folding, and a variable-speed self-propel dial. The kit ships with a 7.5 Ah battery and a 550W rapid charger. The marketing claims up to 60 minutes of cut time per charge and a top self-propel speed of 3.1 mph. They also promote the IPX4 weather-resistant rating which lets you store the mower outdoors under a cover without worrying about a sprinkler hit.
The numbers tracked. Cut time landed at 58 minutes average across three runs in dry grass. Self-propel at full dial measured roughly 3.0 mph against a measured 100 ft path with a stopwatch which is within tolerance for the 3.1 mph claim. The brushless motor noise level measured 74 dB at the operator ear position, well below a typical gas mower in the 92 to 96 dB range.
Who should buy
Buy the EGO 56V 21-inch self-propelled if:
- You have a quarter acre to half acre suburban lot.
- You want to fully replace a gas mower without losing cut quality.
- You value vertical storage in a tight garage.
- You appreciate a 5 year tool warranty.
Skip the EGO if:
- Your lot is smaller than 5,000 square feet. The Sun Joe MJ401E corded mower is plenty for that footprint at a tenth of the price.
- Your lot is over an acre and uneven. A self-propelled push mower at any voltage will be exhausting at that scale.
- You want the cheapest decent battery mower. The Ryobi 40V saves $220 with workable performance.
Cut quality: gas-mower comparable
On dry, 3.5 inch tall fescue at a 3 inch cut height, the EGO produced clean, even cut tips with no obvious tearing across our entire test lawn. The 21-inch steel deck handles the airflow that mulching needs, and the included high-lift blade did not require sharpening across the test season. On a tall first-mow run with grass blades reaching 6 inches, the brushless motor briefly bogged when fed too aggressively but recovered within half a second once we slowed the self-propel dial. That recovery is the difference between a cordless mower that works and one that frustrates.
Wet grass is the harder test, and the EGO handled it as well as any gas mower we have used. Side-discharge is the right choice in wet conditions because the bag chute clogs faster, and the EGOโs discharge path threw clippings cleanly without leaving wet streaks. Mulching mode required two passes in wet conditions which is normal for any mulcher.
Self-propel and ergonomics
The variable-speed dial is the right control. Trigger-actuated self-propel mowers force you to commit to top speed any time you squeeze, which is awkward on inclines or near garden beds. The EGOโs dial lets you preset a comfortable pace and walk steadily without thinking. Top speed at 3.1 mph is faster than I want to walk on most lawns, so I usually run at about 60 percent of dial.
Folded for storage, the mower stands vertically on its rear wheels with the handle locked in place. That trick saves about 4 square feet of garage floor versus a horizontal-stored push mower. For our complete testing protocol see The Tested Hub methodology page.
Battery and runtime: real-world numbers
The 7.5 Ah pack is the right battery for this mower. Lower-capacity 5 Ah packs on competing models stop short of a half acre. We saw 58 minutes average cut time in dry conditions, 42 minutes in tall wet grass, and 54 minutes at 50 F. Charge time on the rapid 550W charger ran about 60 minutes from empty to full, which neatly matches a single mowing session.
After the season the battery tested at about 95 percent of day-one capacity. That is normal cycle behavior for high quality lithium-ion. The 5 year tool warranty plus 3 year battery warranty is among the most generous in the cordless mower class.
Build, noise, and the gas-mower comparison
The deck is steel, not plastic, which is part of why the unit weighs about 75 lb with battery and which is also why it cuts cleanly under load. Plastic-deck cordless mowers feel lighter at the handle but lose airflow on mulching. The EGOโs steel deck does the opposite tradeoff. Over a season the deck has shown some grass-acid staining (normal) but no rust on the cut surface.
Noise was the bigger surprise. At 74 dB the EGO is a third of the perceived loudness of a gas mower. I mowed at 7 AM on a Saturday without waking anyone in the house. That alone changes how the mower fits into a weekly routine.

Should you buy the EGO Power Plus 21-Inch Self-Propelled Cordless Lawn Mower 56V?
The EGO Power Plus 21-inch self-propelled mower is the cordless mower that earns the comparison to gas. The 56V brushless motor and 21-inch deck cut tall grass without bogging, the self-propel speed dial is intuitive, and the included 7.5 Ah battery delivers about 60 minutes of cut time which covered roughly a half acre in our tests. Storage tilts vertical to save garage space, which is the small detail that wins owners over.
Frequently asked questions
Is the EGO 56V mower worth $599 in 2026?+
Yes if you have a quarter to half acre lot, you want a mower that genuinely replaces a gas mower, and you value vertical storage. Across a season the EGO matched our gas mower on cut quality and beat it on noise, vibration, and start-up time. The premium over the [Greenworks 80V](/reviews/greenworks-pro-21-mower) is real, but so is the build quality.
How long does the 7.5 Ah battery actually last?+
We measured about 58 minutes of cut time on a 7.5 Ah pack across our half acre lot at typical 3 inch cutting height in dry grass. Tall, wet grass dropped that to roughly 42 minutes. Cool weather had a smaller effect than we expected, only a 4 minute drop at 50 F.
EGO 56V vs Greenworks Pro 80V: which should I buy?+
The EGO has the better build quality and vertical storage. The [Greenworks Pro](/reviews/greenworks-pro-21-mower) has the lower price by $150 with comparable cut quality. If you have storage space limits, pick the EGO. If you have a budget ceiling, pick the Greenworks. Both are real gas-replacements.
Will it handle long, wet spring grass?+
Yes with planning. Drop the speed dial down to 50 percent, raise the cut height by one notch, and stop to clear the bag chute every few rows. The 21-inch steel deck tunnels grass cleanly even at the high cut. Trying to mow at full speed in wet grass will bog the motor briefly before recovery.
