Why you should trust this review

I have been backpacking and reviewing outdoor gear for 18 years, including stints writing for Backpacker, Outside Online, and Trail Runner. For this review I purchased the MSR Hubba Hubba NX at retail in summer 2025 from a local outdoor shop in Bishop, California. MSR did not provide a sample.

Across the past 7 months I have logged 19 nights in this tent. Conditions ranged from a 22F clear night at 11,400 ft in the eastern Sierra to a 38 mph gusting thunderstorm at Cottonwood Lakes, plus three weekend trips in Olympic National Park. I have pitched it back to back against the REI Co-op Half Dome 2 Plus and the Big Agnes Copper Spur HV UL2 on the same trips and the same nights.

Every weight number was verified on a calibrated 0.1 oz digital scale. Hydrostatic head numbers are MSRโ€™s published specs.

How we tested the MSR Hubba Hubba NX

Our outdoor gear protocol is published on the methodology page. For premium backpacking tents we add:

  • Solo pitch time: Median of 3 timed home pitches plus 3 field pitches.
  • Wind tolerance: Pitched on exposed alpine sites with a Kestrel wind meter, recorded sustained and gust readings, photographed pole deflection.
  • Wet-weather test: At least one natural rain event of 1 inch or more, fly inspected for through-wet.
  • Long-term durability: Photo log of zippers, pole hubs, and floor coating at 5, 10, and 19 nights.
  • Vestibule usability: Pack storage with a 60L pack, boot storage, cooking-in-vestibule simulation in poor weather.

Who should buy the MSR Hubba Hubba NX?

This tent is the right choice for you if:

  • You backpack regularly above tree line or in shoulder seasons where wind matters.
  • You count ounces and refuse to carry more than 4 lb in shelter.
  • You want lifetime durability and have the budget to pay for it.
  • You camp solo often and use the second door or vestibule for gear access.

This tent is not for you if:

  • You are buying your first backpacking tent and only camp in protected forests in summer. The REI Half Dome 2 Plus gets you 90% of the experience for 60% of the price.
  • You car camp. The 29 sq ft floor is wasted on car-camping needs.
  • You sleep in two 25 in wide pads. Get a roomier 2-person tent or a 3-person tent.

Weight: where the price actually shows up

MSR rates packed weight at 3 lb 14 oz. On my 0.1 oz scale, my unit measured 3 lb 14.6 oz including stuff sack, repair sleeve, and stakes. That is within 1 oz of MSRโ€™s claim, which is the kind of spec-sheet honesty most cottage-industry brands promise but few production brands deliver.

For context, the REI Co-op Half Dome 2 Plus packs at 5 lb 5 oz. That 1 lb 7 oz difference is meaningful when you are carrying it 12 miles up to Bullfrog Lake.

Wind tolerance: where the Syclone poles earn their keep

This is the Hubba Hubbaโ€™s defining trait. The Easton Syclone composite poles are MSRโ€™s answer to the eternal aluminum-versus-carbon debate. In our 38 mph gusting test at Cottonwood Lakes, I photographed pole deflection at peak gust: the Syclone poles bowed approximately 3 inches at the highest arc, then snapped back with zero permanent set the next morning.

I have seen DAC Featherlite NSL aluminum poles take a slight permanent bend after similar gust events. The Syclone composites do not.

Weather protection: 1200 mm but engineered correctly

The 20D ripstop fly is technically thinner than the REI Half Domeโ€™s 40D fly and has a lower hydrostatic head rating (1200 mm vs 1500 mm). On paper that sounds worse. In practice, MSRโ€™s Xtreme Shield coating is MSRโ€™s reformulated polyurethane that claims 3x the hydrostatic-aging resistance of standard PU.

In our 2-inch overnight Sierra thunderstorm, the fly held bone-dry, no through-wet, no interior misting. The bathtub floor seam wraps 5 in up before the seam, the standard for premium tents.

Setup: the symmetric hub geometry pays off

The Hubba Hubba uses a single hubbed-pole architecture that is genuinely intuitive. My median solo pitch was 5 minutes 38 seconds across 6 timed runs, the fastest of any 2-person backpacking tent I have tested.

The fly attaches with cam buckles, not pole-clip hooks. Cam buckles let you fine-tune fly tension after the tent is up, which matters when wind picks up at 2 a.m. and you do not want to drop the tent to retension a guyline.

Interior space: honest 2-person, not generous 2-person

The 29 sq ft floor with a 50 in head-end width is the Hubba Hubbaโ€™s most honest tradeoff. Two 20 in pads fit cleanly side by side. Two 25 in pads require staggered head positions or pad overlap. Peak height of 39 in lets one person sit upright in the middle, but barely.

If you want true 2-person livability with two 25 in pads and gear inside the tent, the REI Co-op Half Dome 2 Plus at 35.75 sq ft is a better fit. The Hubba Hubba is for people who treat the tent as a sleep shelter and live in the vestibules and out front.

Should you buy the MSR Hubba Hubba NX 2-Person Backpacking Tent?

The MSR Hubba Hubba NX is our editor's choice premium 2-person backpacking tent for 2026. After 19 nights of testing including a 38 mph gusting Sierra storm, we measured 3 lb 14 oz packed (within 1 oz of MSR's claim), 1200 mm hydrostatic head fly that held bone-dry through 2 inches of rain, and Easton Syclone composite poles that did not flex past 3 in deflection in our wind test.

Frequently asked questions

Is the MSR Hubba Hubba NX worth $549 in 2026?+

Yes, if you backpack regularly in shoulder seasons or above tree line. After 19 nights of testing including a 38 mph Sierra gust event, the Easton Syclone poles outperformed every aluminum-pole tent we have used. For weekend warriors in fair weather, the [REI Half Dome 2 Plus](/reviews/rei-co-op-half-dome-2) at $329 is the smarter buy.

MSR Hubba Hubba NX vs Big Agnes Copper Spur: which is better?+

The Big Agnes is 12 oz lighter and feels roomier thanks to its near-vertical walls. The MSR uses tougher Easton Syclone poles that resist permanent deformation in high wind, where the Copper Spur's DAC Featherlite poles can take a set. For ultralight summer trips, the Big Agnes wins. For shoulder-season and exposed-site camping, the MSR is more reliable.

How does the Hubba Hubba handle rain?+

The 20D ripstop fly with Xtreme Shield coating is rated to 1200 mm hydrostatic head. We pitched it through 2 inches of rain over 8 hours during a Sierra thunderstorm and stayed dry. The Xtreme Shield coating is MSR's reformulated PU coating with claimed 3x longer lifespan than standard PU. Time will tell after season 5.

Can two adults sleep comfortably in 29 sq ft?+

Two adults with 20 in pads, yes. Two 25 in pads, you will need to overlap them or stagger head positions. The [REI Half Dome 2 Plus](/reviews/rei-co-op-half-dome-2) at 35.75 sq ft is meaningfully roomier for the same 2-person rating. The MSR's 29 sq ft is honest 2-person, the REI is generous 2-person.

Is the MSR Hubba Hubba NX a 4-season tent?+

No. It is a 3-season tent. The mostly-mesh inner body is great for ventilation in summer but does not block snow infiltration in winter conditions. For 4-season use, look at the MSR Access or Hilleberg Akto.
