Why you should trust this review
I have been backpacking for 18 years, with 8 of those years overlapping outdoor gear journalism for Backpacker magazine and Outside Online. For this review I purchased the REI Co-op Half Dome 2 Plus at retail through my REI Co-op membership in summer 2025. REI did not provide a sample.
Over the past 8 months I have spent 22 nights in this tent across a 7-day John Muir Trail section in the Sierra Nevada, three weekends on the Lost Coast, and one wet October trip on the Olympic coast where my rain gauge measured 4 inches over a single 14-hour stretch. I tested it back to back against the MSR Hubba Hubba NX and the Big Agnes Copper Spur HV UL2 on the same trips.
Every weight number here came from my own digital postal scale, accurate to 0.1 oz. Hydrostatic head numbers are REI-published; I have not run my own laboratory water-column tests.
How we tested the REI Half Dome 2 Plus
Our outdoor gear protocol is documented on the methodology page. For backpacking tents, we add the following:
- Solo pitch time: 3 timed pitches at home, then 3 in the field on uneven ground.
- Wind tolerance: Pitched on an exposed coastal ridge in 15 to 32 mph sustained gusts, noted pole flex and stake pull.
- Wet-weather test: Minimum one natural rainstorm of 1 inch or more.
- Livability: Two adults with 25 in pads, full sleeping bags, and overnight gear including 60L packs in vestibules.
- Pack-down: Repacked from soaking wet, measured how compactly it would stuff into the included stuff sack.
Who should buy the REI Half Dome 2 Plus?
This tent is the right choice for you if:
- You are a weekend or week-long backpacker who values livability and durability.
- You camp with a partner and want enough room for both of you plus gear inside.
- You want a tent backed by REIโs lifetime guarantee, which lets you return it years later if quality fails.
- You are willing to carry an extra pound for two doors and a 35.75 sq ft floor.
This tent is not for you if:
- You are thru-hiking and counting every ounce. The Big Agnes Copper Spur or Zpacks Duplex will save 2+ lb.
- You want a single-wall design for ultralight setups.
- You camp solo and want a true 1-person tent footprint.
- You winter camp. This is a 3-season tent and the mesh body chills fast in below-freezing nights.
Weather protection: where it justifies the price
The Half Dome 2 Plus uses a 40D ripstop nylon fly with silicone/polyurethane coating rated to 1500 mm hydrostatic head. The floor is 70D nylon taffeta rated to 3000 mm. On paper those numbers are conservative against ultralight tents using 15D fly fabrics with 1200 mm coatings. In practice, that thicker fabric is exactly why this tent shrugged off our 4-inch Olympic coast overnight rain without a drop of interior wetness.
The fly extends to within 4 inches of the ground on all four sides, and the bathtub floor wraps 6 inches up the side walls before the seam. That redundant geometry is what saves your sleeping bag when your tent pad pools water.
Setup: tool-less but not tent-pole-perfect
The Half Dome 2 Plus uses two DAC Featherlite NSL aluminum poles in a hubbed configuration that drops into four corner grommets. Median solo pitch time across 6 timed runs was 6 minutes 12 seconds, faster than the Coleman Sundome at 8:47 and a hair slower than the MSR Hubba Hubba NX at 5:38.
The clip-style attachment is faster than sleeves but creates more pole-to-fabric stress at high tension. After 22 nights I have one minor abrasion mark on a clip but no tears. REIโs lifetime guarantee covers it if anything fails.
Interior space: the standout trait
This is the trait that separates the Half Dome 2 Plus from genuine 2-person ultralight tents. The 35.75 sq ft floor with a 56 in head-end width fits two 25 in sleeping pads side by side without the pads pushing the wall fabric. By contrast, the MSR Hubba Hubba NX at 29 sq ft requires staggered or 20 in pads.
The 42 in peak height lets one person sit fully upright in the middle without head contact. The two vestibules at 11.25 sq ft each (22.5 sq ft combined) easily swallow two 60L packs plus muddy boots.
Build quality and the lifetime guarantee
The Half Dome 2 Plus uses YKK zippers throughout, DAC Featherlite NSL poles (the same poles found on tents costing $549+), and seam-taped construction. After 22 nights including dragging it through a sandy Lost Coast camp, I have zero failures, two minor abrasion marks, and the floor still beads water at the original rate.
The unsung trait is REIโs lifetime member guarantee. If this tent fails through normal use 4 years from now, you return it for a refund or replacement. No competitor in this price tier offers that. For a $329 piece of gear that should last a decade, that is meaningful.

Should you buy the REI Co-op Half Dome 2 Plus Backpacking Tent?
The REI Co-op Half Dome 2 Plus is our top backpacking tent pick for 2026. After 22 nights of testing including a 7-day John Muir Trail section, we measured 5 lb 5 oz packed, 1500 mm hydrostatic head fly that shrugged off a 4-inch overnight Olympic coast deluge, and a 35.75 sq ft floor that fits two adults plus 25-inch sleeping pads with room to spare.
Frequently asked questions
Is the REI Half Dome 2 Plus worth $329 in 2026?+
Yes. After 22 nights of testing across the Sierra and Pacific Northwest, the Half Dome 2 Plus delivered livability comparable to tents in the $549 range while keeping packed weight under 5.5 lb. REI's lifetime guarantee adds resale and warranty value that no competitor matches.
REI Half Dome 2 Plus vs MSR Hubba Hubba NX: which is better?+
The MSR is 1 lb 5 oz lighter and packs smaller, ideal for thru-hikers counting ounces. The REI gives you 6.75 sq ft more floor area, 5 sq ft more vestibule space, and a $220 lower price. For weekend backpackers and shoulder-season trips, the REI wins on value and livability. For ultralight purists, the MSR earns its premium.
How waterproof is the Half Dome 2 Plus rainfly?+
REI rates the fly at 1500 mm hydrostatic head and the floor at 3000 mm. We pitched it through a 4-inch overnight rainstorm on the Olympic coast in October 2025 and stayed completely dry, with zero interior wetness. The bathtub floor design adds 6 in of waterproof wall before the seam, which is critical in puddled-tent-pad situations.
Does the Half Dome 2 Plus actually fit two adults?+
Yes, comfortably. The 35.75 sq ft floor and 56 in head-end width fit two 25 in wide sleeping pads side by side without overlap. We tested it with two 6 ft adults and full overnight gear in the vestibules. Compared to the 29 sq ft floor on the [MSR Hubba Hubba NX](/reviews/msr-hubba-hubba-nx), the REI feels meaningfully roomier.
Is the REI Half Dome 2 Plus good for thru-hiking?+
It is the right pick if you value durability and livability over absolute weight. At 5 lb 5 oz packed, it is roughly 1.5 to 2 lb heavier than ultralight options. For a 5-day section hike or weekend trips, that weight is manageable. For a multi-month thru-hike, most thru-hikers go ultralight.
