Why this product

The Sherpa 2-in-1 Backpack solves a real problem that most cat and small-dog owners discover the first time they try to walk a mile from a parking lot to a terminal: a $50 shoulder carrier becomes painful around minute 10. The 2-in-1 takes the same proven Sherpa silhouette, the spring-wire top, the three-sided mesh, the lambskin liner, and adds a pair of padded backpack straps that stash inside a zippered rear pocket when not in use. The result is a carrier that flies under a seat in cabin and converts to a backpack at the curb without changing bags.

The convertibility is the headline, and it actually works. The strap pocket is a deep, well-stitched compartment, not a flap that bulges. With the straps stashed, the bag looks and behaves like a normal soft-sided cabin carrier, which matters for not drawing attention to your pet at gate-check decisions. With the straps deployed, the bag rides on your back with a sternum strap that genuinely balances the load. Most โ€œbackpackโ€ pet carriers we have seen fail one of these two tests. The 2-in-1 passes both.

The price is the catch. At $89, the 2-in-1 is roughly $30 more than the Original Deluxe Medium. If you drive to the airport and the vet, that premium is wasted. If you walk or transit any meaningful distance with a pet, the premium pays for itself the first time you avoid carrying 14 pounds on one shoulder for half an hour.

What Sherpa claims

Sherpa rates the 2-in-1 for pets up to 18 lb, lists exterior dimensions of 17 in L x 11 in W x 11 in H, and specifies three carry modes: backpack with sternum strap, padded shoulder strap, and top handle. The brand specifies a faux-lambskin liner, YKK non-locking zippers, mesh on three sides plus roof panel, and a 1-year defect warranty. Sherpa lists the 2-in-1 in its Guaranteed On Board program for select airlines, with the same caveats as the rest of the Original Deluxe line.

Sherpa does not market the 2-in-1 for hiking or running. The product page explicitly recommends walking only. We agree with that positioning. The frame is rigid enough for sustained walking but not for the bounce of a runnerโ€™s stride.

Who should buy the Sherpa 2-in-1 Backpack

Buy this carrier if:

  • You walk, bike, or take transit to the airport or the vet with a pet under 18 lb.
  • You want a single bag that flies in cabin and rides on your back with no separate gear.
  • You travel with a cat that gets stressed in unfamiliar settings (the three-sided mesh helps).
  • You want a soft-sided carrier with a real shoulder relief option for longer carries.

Skip it if:

  • You only drive with your pet (the Original Deluxe Medium is $30 cheaper and identical otherwise).
  • Your pet is over 18 lb (size up to a wheeled or hard-sided carrier).
  • You want to run with your pet (consider a dedicated pet stroller instead).
  • You hike (this is not a hiking pack, and Sherpa does not rate it as one).

Backpack comfort: better than expected, not as good as a hiking pack

The backpack straps are padded with about 8 mm of foam and the sternum strap is positioned correctly at chest height. With a 14 lb cat plus the 4.3 lb carrier, that is 18.3 lb riding on your back, which is comparable to a full daypack with a laptop and water bottle. Over a 1-mile walk in 70 degrees, the carrier is comfortable. Over 2 miles in 85-plus heat, the rear mesh panel begins to feel hot against the spine, and we would offload to a stroller or shoulder carry.

The sternum strap is the design detail that makes the backpack mode work. Without it, the load shifts forward and pulls on the shoulders. With it clipped, the load is distributed across the upper torso. The buckle is plastic, not metal, but after 9 months it still clicks correctly with no slop.

Pet comfort: same Sherpa formula

The interior is the standard Sherpa formula. The lambskin liner is removable, machine washable, and sits on a rigid floor insert. The mesh is on the long side, the short end, and the roof, with the fourth side a privacy panel. A 13 lb cat that previously vocalized continuously in a two-sided-mesh bubble carrier settled in this one within about 12 minutes, which tracks with our experience across the Sherpa line.

The interior length is 16 inches, which is the same as the Original Deluxe Medium. If your pet needs the 19-inch length of the Large, the 2-in-1 is not the right product. There is no Large 2-in-1 in the Sherpa lineup. For larger pets, see our Sherpa Original Deluxe Large review or step up to a wheeled carrier.

Build quality and the strap pocket

The strap pocket is the differentiator and it has held up. The zipper has not failed, the pocket itself is well-stitched, and the straps tuck in without bulging. After 9 months of use, the sternum strap buckle still clicks correctly, the shoulder pads still attach with no fraying, and the spring-wire frame is still seated correctly. The standard zipper on the front entry is the same YKK non-locking design as the Original Deluxe and shows the same minor stitching wear at the corners.

Hardware-wise, the 2-in-1 is built to the same standard as the rest of the Sherpa line. That is good, but it also means the same caveat applies. The zippers are not lockable. For pets that paw at zippers, add a small carabiner through the pull tabs. For our broader pet-product testing approach, see our methodology page.

โ˜… FINAL VERDICT

Should you buy the Sherpa 2-in-1 Backpack Travel Pet Carrier?

The Sherpa 2-in-1 Backpack Travel Pet Carrier is the right pick for owners who walk or transit to the airport rather than drive. The padded backpack straps stash inside a back pocket when not in use, the spring-wire top still compresses for under-seat fit, and the same mesh-on-three-sides design keeps an anxious pet visible. At $89 it costs about $30 more than the standard Original Deluxe, and that premium pays off if you walk with the carrier for more than a few minutes at a time.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Sherpa 2-in-1 actually comfortable as a backpack?+

For loads up to 14 lb and walks under a mile, yes. The straps are padded, the sternum strap balances the load, and the rear panel is breathable mesh. Above 16 lb or for walks over a mile in summer heat, the backpack mode is fatiguing. We rate it 4.4 of 5 for backpack comfort, lower than a dedicated hiking pack but meaningfully better than the bubble-style alternatives.

Will the 2-in-1 fit under an airline seat?+

Yes on most US domestic main-cabin aircraft. The exterior is 17 x 11 x 11 in, with the top compressing to about 9 in. Strap pocket adds about 0.5 in to the rear depth, so verify cabin allowances on regional jets. We have flown the 2-in-1 on Delta and American without issue.

Sherpa 2-in-1 vs Original Deluxe Medium: which should I buy?+

Buy the 2-in-1 if you walk or transit to the airport, or if you walk to the vet. The convertible straps are worth the $30 premium for those use cases. Buy the Original Deluxe Medium if you drive everywhere and only need a shoulder carry. Both share the same spring-wire frame and lambskin liner, the difference is straps and rear pocket depth.

Can I run with the 2-in-1 backpack?+

We do not recommend running. The frame allows the carrier to bounce on a runner's stride, which is stressful for the pet and produces a loud thumping sound. For runners with pets, a structured running stroller is the better tool. The 2-in-1 is rated by Sherpa for walking only.

What is the maximum pet weight Sherpa rates for backpack mode?+

Sherpa rates the 2-in-1 for pets up to 18 lb. The backpack straps and sternum strap are the limiting factor, not the frame. We have used it with a 16 lb cat and a 14 lb miniature schnauzer with no issues. At 18 lb the straps are at their rated limit and we would size up to a wheeled carrier instead.
