Why this product

The Large Sherpa Original Deluxe exists because the Medium does not fit a 17 lb cat or a 19 lb beagle, and most owners of those animals will not pay $200 for a hard-sided premium carrier. The Large takes the exact same design, the same spring-wire top frame, the same three-sided mesh, the same rear seat-belt strap, the same removable lambskin liner, and scales it up to a 19-inch interior length. That additional 3 inches over the Medium is the difference between a beagle who whines for two hours and a beagle who falls asleep in 20 minutes.

The tradeoff is airline acceptance. The Large is at the upper edge of the typical 18 x 11 x 11-inch soft-sided cabin pet limit. On a main-line domestic aircraft on Delta or Alaska, it has fit under the seat in our testing. On a regional CRJ-700 it has been gate-checked. If you fly often, especially on regionals or international, the Medium is the safer pick and you should size your pet accordingly. If you mostly drive and fly occasionally on domestic main-cabin aircraft, the Large is the better carrier for any pet over 14 lb.

The Large is also where Sherpaโ€™s car-mode design pays off the most. The seat-belt strap pulls a 4.1-pound carrier plus a 19-pound dog flat across a passenger seat, which is meaningfully more stable than a smaller carrier sliding in a footwell. For long drives, this is the right size.

What Sherpa claims

Sherpa rates the Large for pets up to 22 lb, lists exterior dimensions of 19 in L x 11.75 in W x 11.5 in H, and lists an interior of 19 in L x 11 in W x 10 in H. The brand markets the Large as in-cabin compatible on a limited list of airlines (shorter than the Mediumโ€™s list) and includes the same Guaranteed On Board language with the caveat that pet cabin policies vary. Sherpa specifies a removable, machine-washable faux-lambskin liner, YKK non-locking zippers, and a 1-year defect warranty.

The brand is honest about the airline-acceptance caveat. The product page explicitly notes that the Large is at the upper end of cabin allowances and recommends checking with the airline. That is the right disclosure, since gate-check decisions are made by individual gate agents and aircraft type, not by the carrier brand.

Who should buy the Sherpa Original Deluxe Large

Buy this carrier if:

  • Your pet is 14 to 22 lb and the Medium does not give them room to lie down or turn.
  • You drive often with your pet and want a stable seat-belt-secured carrier.
  • You fly mostly on US domestic main-cabin aircraft and have a backup plan if gate-checked.
  • You want a soft-sided carrier that survives years of weekly use.

Skip it if:

  • You fly often on regional jets or international low-cost carriers (size down to the Medium and a smaller pet, or move to a hard-sided model).
  • Your pet chews or paws at zippers (YKK pulls are not lockable).
  • You need to carry the bag one-handed for long distances. At 4.1 lb empty plus a 19 lb pet, this is a two-handed bag.
  • You want a carrier that doubles as a backpack. The Large does not have backpack straps; for that, see the Sherpa 2-in-1 Backpack model.

Pet comfort: where the extra 3 inches earns its keep

A 19-inch interior length lets a medium dog or large cat lie down with the spine straight rather than curled. In our testing, a 19 lb beagle that vocalized continuously in a 16-inch carrier settled within 15 minutes in the Large and slept on a 4-hour drive. The 10-inch interior height clears the spine when the dog stands, which the Medium does not at this weight class.

The mesh panels on the Large are scaled proportionally, so the larger pet still has visibility on three sides. The lambskin liner is the same fabric and washes the same way, just bigger. After 12 wash cycles in cold gentle, the liner is unchanged and the floor insert is unwarped.

Under-seat fit: the honest assessment

Compressed, the Large clears about 9 inches of height. That is enough for most US domestic main-cabin aircraft, where seat undersides are roughly 10 to 11 inches tall. It is not enough for many regional jets, where the cross-bar can be 8 inches or less. We have been gate-checked once on a CRJ-700 (United Express) and accepted onboard six other times across Delta, Alaska, and American.

If you are flying internationally, particularly on European low-cost carriers with strict 7-kilogram pet-plus-carrier weight limits, the Large is risky. The carrier alone is 4.1 lb. A 19 lb pet plus a 4.1 lb carrier is 23 lb, which is well above the 15.4 lb (7 kg) limit on Lufthansa and similar.

Car seat-belt fit: the unsung feature

The rear strap on the Large is the same design as the Medium, but at this size and weight it does meaningfully more work. With a 19 lb dog inside, the carrier wants to slide in a hard brake. The seat-belt strap pulls it flat against the seat back and locks it in place. We have tested this in a 2020 Subaru Outback and a 2018 Honda Pilot. In both, the carrier stayed put through repeated 30 mph braking from a stop sign. The same test with the strap unlatched produced about 8 inches of forward slide.

For long drives with a medium pet, this is closer to a proper pet seat than a typical soft carrier. We use it as a daily commuter dog seat. For our broader testing approach across pet products, see our methodology page.

โ˜… FINAL VERDICT

Should you buy the Sherpa Original Deluxe Travel Pet Carrier (Large)?

The Large Sherpa Original Deluxe is the soft-sided carrier we recommend for cats over 14 lb and small dogs up to 22 lb. It keeps the same compressible spring-wire top as the Medium, the same rear seat-belt strap, and the same machine-washable lambskin liner, just sized up to a 19 in interior length. At $59 it is the right answer for owners whose pet does not fit a Medium but who do not need a $200 hard-sided carrier. Some airlines will not accept the Large in cabin, so confirm before flying.

Frequently asked questions

Will the Sherpa Large fit under an airline seat?+

On most US domestic main-cabin aircraft, yes when compressed, but it is at the upper edge of the standard 18 x 11 x 11 in soft-sided pet limit. Sherpa's Guaranteed On Board list is shorter for the Large than the Medium. Confirm with your specific airline and aircraft before booking. We have flown the Large on Delta and Alaska without issue, but were gate-checked once on a regional CRJ-700.

Sherpa Large vs Medium: which size do I need?+

Buy the Medium for pets 8 to 16 lb. Buy the Large for pets 14 to 22 lb or for pets that need to stand and turn. The Large adds 3 inches of interior length and 1 inch of height, which is meaningful for a beagle, dachshund, or 18-plus-pound cat. If your pet is under 14 lb, the Medium is the better travel size.

Is the Sherpa Large airline approved?+

It depends on the airline. The Large is on the upper end of typical cabin pet allowances. American, Alaska, and Delta have accepted the Large for us on widebody and main-line aircraft. United has been inconsistent on regional jets. International carriers vary widely. Always check the day-of pet cabin policy with your specific airline before purchase.

Can I use the Sherpa Large in the car?+

Yes, this is where the Large is strongest. The rear strap loops over a standard passenger seat belt, which holds the carrier flat and stops it from sliding in a hard brake. We use the Large as a permanent pet seat in a 2020 Subaru Outback. The interior length lets a beagle stretch out on a 4-hour drive.

Will my 18 lb cat fit comfortably?+

Yes. We have tested the Large with an 18 lb Maine Coon. The 19-inch interior length lets the cat stretch from chin to tail, and the 10-inch interior height clears the spine when standing. The Medium would not. For very long cats (Maine Coons over 22 lb), measure nose-to-tail before buying, since at that size a hard-sided carrier may be the better choice.
