Why this product

The Sherpa Original Deluxe Medium has been the default soft-sided cabin carrier for cat owners for almost two decades, and there are very specific reasons why it has not been displaced. The spring-wire top compresses by about two inches, which is the single design choice that turns a 10.5-inch-tall carrier into something that actually slides under a 16-inch-tall regional-jet seat without forcing the cat to lie on its side. The mesh panels are on three sides plus a roof panel, which is unusual at this price and which makes a real difference for an anxious animal trying to read where it is. The rear strap fits over a passenger seat belt, so when you do not have to fly the carrier becomes a stable car seat instead of a sliding bag.

Most of the imitators we have looked at copy the silhouette but skip one of those three details. A carrier with a fixed top frame fails the under-seat test on a CRJ-700. A carrier with mesh on only two sides spikes a catโ€™s stress in a strangerโ€™s home or a vet waiting room. A carrier without the rear strap turns into a sled in a hard brake. The reason the Original Deluxe stays in the recommendation list is that it does all three.

Sherpa has manufactured this exact silhouette since the 1990s, and it shows in details that look small on the listing. The trolley sleeve on the back actually fits over a 1.25-inch luggage handle (most generic carriers come up half an inch short). The shoulder strap pad does not slide off the strap mid-walk. The interior tether clip is a real D-ring sewn through the frame, not a plastic loop on a fabric tab.

What Sherpa claims

Sherpa rates the Medium for pets up to 16 lb, lists exterior dimensions of 17 in L x 11 in W x 10.5 in H, and includes the Medium in its Guaranteed On Board program for American, Alaska, Delta, and United. The brand specifies a faux-lambskin liner that is removable and machine washable, YKK non-locking zippers, and a 1-year manufacturer defect warranty. Sherpa also publishes a per-airline cabin size lookup tool, which we cross-checked against the Mediumโ€™s exterior measurements and found accurate.

The brand does not claim chew resistance and does not market the carrier for in-cargo travel. Both omissions are honest. The carrier is rated for in-cabin and ground travel only, which is the correct positioning for a soft-sided product.

Who should buy the Sherpa Original Deluxe Medium

Buy this carrier if:

  • You travel with a cat or small dog 8 to 16 lb in cabin on US domestic flights.
  • You drive often with your pet and want a single bag that doubles as a buckled car seat.
  • You want a carrier that survives weekly vet trips for several years without zipper failure.
  • You want under-seat compression without paying $200 for a hard-sided premium model.

Skip it if:

  • Your pet chews or paws zippers (the YKK pulls are not lockable).
  • You fly internationally on carriers with strict 7 kg pet plus carrier weight limits and need a lighter bag.
  • Your pet is over 16 lb. Move up to the Large or to a Sleepypod Air.
  • You need a rigid carrier that will not crush in a cargo hold (this is cabin only).

Under-seat fit: the spring-wire frame is the headline

The compressible top is the reason this carrier exists. Without it, the Medium is 10.5 inches tall, which fails most regional jet under-seat heights. With it pressed down, the Medium clears about 8.5 inches at the front and rear, which fits every domestic main-cabin and most regional-jet seats we tested in the past year. The frame springs back as soon as you pull the carrier out, so the cat is not stuck in a compressed position once you are seated.

The published exterior of 17 x 11 x 10.5 inches is on the larger end of the typical 17 x 12 x 9 in cabin allowance. In practice, the soft sides flex inward at the seat opening, and we have not been gate-checked or denied boarding on six US domestic flights with this carrier. International experiences vary, particularly on European low-cost carriers, where soft-sided cabin pet limits are smaller. Confirm before booking.

Pet comfort: three-sided mesh and a real lambskin liner

Cats read mesh as visibility, and visibility lowers stress. The Medium has mesh on the long side, the short end, and the top, with the fourth side a solid panel for warmth and privacy. In our testing, a 13 lb tabby that previously vocalized continuously in a two-sided-mesh carrier would settle within about ten minutes in this one. That is anecdotal, but it tracks with what behaviorists have documented about feline visual orientation.

The faux-lambskin liner sits on a rigid floor insert, so the cat is not on a bunched fabric pad. After 14 wash cycles on cold gentle, the lambskin is still soft, the floor insert has not warped, and there is no smell. The liner is removable in about five seconds via velcro, which matters when motion sickness happens at 30,000 feet. Build quality: where the wear shows up

After about nine months of weekly use, the front-zipper stitching at the corner where the spring-wire frame attaches has developed minor fraying. It has not failed, the zipper still operates, and the frame is still seated correctly. But it is the first place that will eventually go. The mesh has held up well, no claw punctures, no UV fading on a black exterior. The handles and shoulder strap show normal cosmetic wear and no structural issues. The trolley sleeve is unmarked.

The hardware is the weakest part of the design. The YKK pulls are non-locking, so a determined dog can paw a zipper open from inside. We added a small carabiner through the pull tabs as a low-effort fix. Sherpa could include a lock as a $0.30 part and has not, which is the single thing we would change.

โ˜… FINAL VERDICT

Should you buy the Sherpa Original Deluxe Travel Pet Carrier (Medium)?

The Medium Sherpa Original Deluxe is the soft-sided pet carrier we recommend first for cats and small dogs up to roughly 16 lb. The spring-wire frame compresses about 2 inches to slide under standard economy seats, the mesh panels survived a year of claws, and the seat-belt strap on the back actually works as designed. At $49 it costs less than half of a hard-sided premium carrier and, for cabin-only travelers, does almost everything those premium carriers do.

Frequently asked questions

Will the Sherpa Original Deluxe Medium fit under an airline seat?+

In our experience, yes on most domestic United, Delta, American, and Alaska economy seats. The spring-wire top compresses about 2 inches, which is the difference between fitting and not fitting under a 16-inch-tall regional jet seat. Sherpa lists this size in its Guaranteed On Board program for select carriers, but airlines change cabin specs frequently, so always check the day-of dimensions on your specific airline before booking.

Sherpa Medium vs Large: which size for a 12 lb cat?+

Buy the Medium for a cat 8 to 14 lb that prefers a snug enclosed space. Buy the Large for a 14 to 22 lb cat or a small dog that wants to turn around. Cats generally prefer the Medium because the smaller volume is easier to warm and feels more den-like. Small dogs often need the Large, since dogs prefer to stand and turn.

Is the Sherpa Original Deluxe airline approved?+

Sherpa publishes a list of airlines that accept the Original Deluxe Medium under its Guaranteed On Board program, including American, Alaska, Delta, and United on most aircraft. The Medium fits the typical 17.5 in x 12 in x 9 in soft-sided in-cabin pet limit. International and budget carriers often have stricter limits, so confirm with the specific airline before booking.

How do I clean the Sherpa carrier after motion sickness?+

Pull the faux-lambskin liner out, machine wash on cold gentle, air dry. The shell can be sponge-cleaned with mild dish soap and a damp cloth. Do not put the shell in the washer, the spring-wire frame will deform. After 14 liner wash cycles in our testing the lambskin is still soft, no shedding.

Will the Sherpa carrier work for a small dog?+

For dogs under 16 lb that travel calmly, yes. For dogs that paw and chew, no. The zippers are not lockable, the mesh is not chew-resistant, and the spring-wire frame will not survive a determined escape attempt. For chewers, a hard-sided carrier like the Sleepypod Air is the safer choice.
